I submitted the dance program I had prepared long ago.
But this time, it’s not a solo performance.
I gathered all the girls in the class who were interested in the show and arranged a group classical dance.
I paid out of my own pocket to hire a teacher, bought the most expensive costumes, and customized the best props.
In comparison, Phyllis's simple white-dress piano solo seemed painfully basic.
She must have cried to Ulric about something. That evening, when I came home from school, he stopped me in the garden.
"Ivetta." My brother stared at me expressionlessly.
"Withdraw your performance from the centennial celebration."
I smiled. "What the fuck are you barking about now, Ulric?"
"Don't think I'm negotiating with you." A cold mockery appeared in his eyes.
“If you insist on going, suffer the consequences yourself."
I stopped in my tracks, staring at his frosty eyes.
"Brother, your precious little angel has studied piano for over ten years and still doesn't have the confidence to compete with me on the same stage?"
"What a useless piece of shit."
A few days before the show, Finnian tracked me down.
"Sweetheart."
"It was my fault last time. But you've blocked me everywhere and refuse to see me."
"I don't understand what happened. Did you misunderstand me, or… did you fall for someone else?”
As he spoke those last words, his voice carried a distinct note of pain. “But you clearly said yourself, you’d always like me the most.”
A surge of anger mixed with sharp pain suddenly rushed through me.
I had genuinely loved him for years.
When he said he didn't like me filming kiss scenes, I turned down opportunities from renowned directors.
When he said Phyllis had a difficult upbringing and was bullied in the orphanage, I forgave her offenses again and again.
All I wanted was genuine love in return.
What I got instead was their ten years of slander and hatred.
In that moment, I couldn't even bother with pretenses anymore.
I grabbed Finnian's collar and shoved him hard against a tree trunk.
He sucked in a painful breath, but before he could speak, I slapped him across the face.
I didn't hold back at all.
His pale face instantly swelled and reddened.
I leaned close to him, speaking slowly, word by word.
"You’ve known Phyllis for a long time, I already know."
"If you're so into her, why pretend to care about me? You want to keep me dangling, use me, and at the same time be a fucking dog to your sweet Pgyllis?"
“You’re just as damn cheap as your homewrecker mother."
By the time I said the last word, the emotions in his eyes brewed like a storm ready to burst.
But he couldn’t say another word.
I scoffed, let go of him, and turned to leave.
