My school application got approved pretty fast.
Finnian's injuries were much worse than mine—he was still hospitalized after I'd recovered.
"I heard Phyllis visited him and comforted him, saying it wasn't his fault but yours for being so heartless," Viola came over with a massive bouquet of lilies-of-the-valley, dropping onto my couch with a huff.
"Excuse me? Those two psychos deserve each other. They tried to break your leg, and somehow you're the heartless one?"
I glanced at the flowers in her hand. "These must’ve been expensive. You guys should’ve kept the prize money for yourselves."
"Nah, everyone pitched in. Everyone heard you're going abroad, so we all chipped in to get these for you."
She pushed the flowers into my hands, then took a deep breath like she'd made some kind of decision.
"Ivetta."
"Yeah?"
"I feel like you know things I don’t. Like, something changed after Phyllis transferred here.... I don't know how to explain it. If that doesn't make sense, just ignore me."
She carefully avoided the bouquet and gave me a gentle hug.
"Come back soon, okay? When you’re back, we’re still friends."
The night before my departure, Mom and I sat on the balcony in the evening breeze.
She looked at me, hesitating to speak.
I took her hand, looking directly into her eyes: "Mom, don't worry about me."
In my past life, my mother died in a car accident.
While she was alive, no matter how much Dad favored Ulric, he never dared to push me too far.
Thinking about that made something in my chest tighten.
In my previous life, Ulric became almost insanely obsessed with Phyllis.
That car crash—could it really have been just an accident?
A chill ran down my spine. My grip on my mom’s hand tightened unconsciously.
"You have to be careful. Watch out for yourself."
I hesitated, then added, "Be wary of Ulric."
"You’re different now, Ivetta." Mom stared at me, sighing. "That’s my failure as a mother."
"You used to be so naive, believing whatever anyone told you. When I said Finnian was trouble, you'd argue back, 'He's not like that at all!'"
"On your birthday, when I asked your father about giving you company shares, you undermined me, saying jewelry and dresses would be fine. It's really drove me crazy."
She exhaled slowly, looking out at the dark sky.
"Back then, I wished you could be smarter, more alert. But if what made you like this came at a terrible price… I'd rather you stayed innocent forever."
How could any mother not understand her own child?
I really was an idiot in my last life, always assuming the best in people.
That's why Phyllis screwed me over countless times, yet I never truly struck back.
That's why I died at my own engagement party.
"Don't worry, Mom," I wiped at the corner of my stinging eyes, forcing out a light laugh.
"In this dog-eat-dog world, the innocent are just waiting to be devoured."
Such a shame I had to die once to learn this lesson.
