The last person I visited was Finnian.
Honestly? I hadn’t even planned on it.
Phyllis had been my enemy from the beginning, and Ulric was connected to me by blood.
But Finnian?
Once my love for him was gone, he became nothing to me.
But the cops said he wanted to see me.
So across a glass window, we sat face to face. He didn’t speak at first. Just stared at me.
Until I impatiently stood up. "What the hell do you want?"
"...It wasn't supposed to be like this," he finally spoke softly. "Wintermere should have been mine. We were supposed to be engaged."
I froze mid-step, whipping my head around.
He gazed at me steadily, something unfathomable flickering in his dark pupils.
Looking at his face, if not for that faint scar on his forehead, I might have thought for a moment I was seeing the Finnian from my past life.
Coming to my senses, I found it absurdly laughable.
"Just engaged? Why stop there? You used me to take everything from the Wintermere family. Then you teamed up with Ulric and murdered me."
"But much, much later... I regretted it," he said hoarsely. "Only, you never knew."
"I wished so badly for you to know..."
How ridiculous. How utterly laughable.
"Right, because I was dead. Of course I didn't know."
I turned back, bracing myself against the glass, staring him down word by word.
"But even if I had known, so what? Who gives a shit about your regrets?"
"This time, I'm the winner. You're the one going to hell."
"So?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Figured out how you're gonna apologize yet?"
By the time I stepped outside, the sky had turned black.
Sibyl called to say she would be going abroad after the New Year to start new experiments at a research institute.
I wished her good luck.
After hanging up, I saw Viola's message.
"At the coffee already. Get your ass over here, you’re paying."
"On my way, boss."
Outside my window, a crescent moon hung high in the night sky.
Casting a pale glow over the deep, inky black.
But soon—
The moon would set.
And my sun would rise again.
