In the following days, Sean did not return to the villa.
But this brought a sense of relief to Rachel.
Since her cancer diagnosis, she had been battling with illness every day. No matter how many pills she took or how many rounds of chemotherapy she endured, she still vomited blood in large amounts and lost clumps of hair.
Her body felt like it was being hammered by countless blows, her bones seemed to fracture inch by inch. Even after swallowing bottle after bottle of sleeping pills, she still couldn't sleep.
On another night when her condition flared up, Rachel mechanically turned on the tap and washed the blood from the sink. The sound of water splashing loudly could not mask her heavy breathing.
She turned off the faucet, dragging her heavy steps as she made her way to the bedroom.
Suddenly, a news broadcast interrupted the TV in the living room.
“Sean, CEO of the Harris Corporation, and Xena Brown, daughter of the Brown family, have announced their engagement. The two are set to marry next month…”
Rachel’s footsteps came to an abrupt halt, instinctively following the voice to the screen.
On the screen, Sean stood in a well-tailored black suit, with a bright smiling woman standing beside him.
Rachel's pupils dilated, and her heart felt as though it was being tightly squeezed by an invisible hand.
No… it can’t be…
Years ago, after being forced to break up with Sean, she had gone abroad, never expecting that he, unwilling to give up, would follow her and end up in a car accident that led to his kidney rupture.
When she heard the news, she rushed back anonymously to donate her kidney to him. Yet now, her good deed had been claimed by someone else.
She wanted to tell him, but her throat felt as though it were blocked, making it impossible to speak.
Her time was running out, and even if she spoke, what would change?
It would only cause him more pain.
At that moment, the villa’s door was suddenly pushed open.
The two people from the news appeared before her.
As soon as Xena saw her, she screamed, rushing into Sean’s arms. “Ah! A ghost!”
At that moment, Rachel’s face turned as white as paper. Her frail body seemed to be blown over by the slightest breeze. Under the bright lights, she looked almost translucent, with her bones visible beneath the skin.
Sean furrowed his brow, casting a cold glance at her, before gently patting Xena’s back. “Don’t be afraid, that’s not a ghost.”
Xena raised her head from his chest, asking timidly, “Then who is she?”
Sean answered indifferently, “A servant.”
Rachel’s heart sank, her fingers instinctively digging into her palm.
Yes, he forcibly brought her back, never touching her, never giving her any status, making her watch him sleep with others every day, and clean up after him. Wasn’t she just a servant?
Xena gave her a meaningful look, her tone dripping with disdain. “Since you're just a servant, why don’t you hurry and cook?”
Rachel lowered her head and silently walked toward the kitchen.
Behind her, Sean’s gaze lingered on her figure, his eyes deep and unreadable.
In the kitchen, Rachel struggled to lift the pot, pouring the soup into a bowl.
Her fingers trembled so much that she could barely hold onto the pot handle, and beads of cold sweat formed on her forehead.
At that moment, the kitchen door was pushed open.
Xena walked in, her voice unnervingly gentle. “Let me help you.”
Rachel quickly dodged her hand, softly saying, “No need, Miss Brown. The kitchen is full of smoke; you should go out.”
But Xena didn’t leave. Instead, she took a few steps closer to her.
“Actually, I recognize you, Rachel. The white moonlight that Sean has been pining for all these years.”
“You’re really strange, aren’t you? You left him back then because you thought he was poor, but now you come back and secretly donate a kidney to him, even knowing I’ve claimed your credit. And you didn’t expose me.
What’s your secret, exactly?”
Rachel didn’t answer her question, merely continuing, “Miss Brown, the food will be ready soon. Please, go out.”
She was about to ask her to leave, but Xena, who was already at the door, suddenly turned around.
In the next moment, her hand swept across the soup bowl on the island.
“Crash!”
The bowl shattered on the floor, and the scalding soup splashed onto Xena’s legs.
“Ah!” She screamed, falling to the ground.
