Rachel sat frozen for a long while, slowly clutching the coat around her body, burying her head into it.
Tears silently soaked the fabric, and her heart felt as if it had been torn apart.
She wasn’t sure how long she had been sitting on the ground, but after Sean and Xena had long left, she struggled to get up, put on her coat, and staggered towards the exit.
Just then, the fire alarm in the mall suddenly went off!
Countless people scrambled toward the emergency exit.
Rachel’s heart lurched in panic. Ignoring her weak body, she squeezed through the crowd, but her steps were shaky, and people behind her pushed her without mercy.
“Move! Get out of the way!”
Already weakened, she was shoved to the ground. Countless feet trampled over her, and pain swept through her body like a tidal wave.
Rachel curled up on the floor, desperately shielding her head with her hands, while the sounds of hurrying footsteps and screams filled her ears. Her eyelids grew heavier, and her vision became blurry.
Tears mingled with the dust on the ground and streaked down her face.
Just as the pain was about to make her lose consciousness, a familiar voice suddenly came from afar.
"Rachel!"
She sluggishly lifted her head, and saw someone running frantically toward her.
He was in such a hurry, so anxious, and his eyes were filled with concern for her.
It was-
Sean!
……
Rachel woke up to the sound of an argument.
She slowly opened her eyes and found herself lying in a hospital bed.
The door to the room was half open, and she could hear Sean and Xena arguing outside.
Xena’s face was streaked with tears as she plaintively questioned the man in front of her. “Didn’t you say she was just your maid? Why did you rush into a fire to save her? Who exactly is she to you?!”
Sean pressed his fingers to his temple and pulled her into his arms. “She is my maid. Don’t overthink things, be good. I won’t interfere with her anymore, alright?”
Xena clearly didn’t believe him, her voice trembling with emotion. “Then prove it! Prove that she means nothing to you!”
Sean fell silent for a moment before he pushed open the door to the hospital room and walked in.
His gaze fell on Rachel, his expression cold and complicated.
Rachel lifted her head, meeting his eyes. Her eyes were empty, lifeless, like an endless void, causing Sean to instinctively look away.
But remembering the sobbing Xena outside, he finally turned back to look at Rachel. His voice was as cold as ice. “You’ve always loved money, haven’t you? I can give you a large sum.”
In the next moment, he took out a thick wad of cash and slapped it onto her face.
“If you drink one bottle of alcohol, I’ll give you ten thousand. Drink it all, and I’ll give you a million.”
Rachel’s heart jolted sharply.
He knew full well that she was allergic to alcohol.
Her body trembled slightly as she bit her lip, the taste of blood flooding her mouth.
After what felt like an eternity, she finally lifted her head, her voice barely a whisper, as if speaking to herself. “I’ll drink.”
Soon, Sean’s assistant pushed in cart after cart of alcohol.
Rachel, like a marionette, numbly picked up a bottle, drinking one after another, pouring the alcohol into her mouth.
The bitter, fiery taste burned her throat and stomach. Her mind was flooded with memories from the past.
That year, Sean had suffered from a stomach hemorrhage due to excessive drinking. She had been heartbroken, and to protect him, she had used the excuse that she could drink well and took the alcohol in his place.
But in the end, she was hospitalized due to her alcohol allergy.
He had gone mad, staying by her side for three days and nights, so anxious that he nearly lost his life.
After that, he never let her touch a drop of alcohol again.
But now…
Rachel’s heart felt as if it had been twisted by a knife, and by the tenth bottle, she could no longer bear it. She violently vomited the alcohol up.
And along with it, a large pool of blood.
Just as the attending doctor walked in, he was horrified by the sight and shouted, "Are you crazy? You’ve got cancer and you’re still drinking?!"
Sean’s voice suddenly rang out, trembling with disbelief. “Who’s got cancer?!”
