Rachel woke up to pain.
She struggled to open her eyes, only to find herself lying in the maid’s room.
She reached for her phone to check the time, but her hand felt as though it weighed a thousand pounds, too heavy to lift.
Her mind was foggy, her throat felt like it had been burned by fire, and each swallow felt like swallowing knives.
She wasn’t sure if it was the aftermath of the car accident or the pain from the cancer.
The pain was like a sharp steel needle ruthlessly piercing through her entire body. She curled up in bed, gritting her teeth, but still couldn’t stop the painful groans escaping her lips.
With great difficulty, she managed to crawl out of bed and open the drawer, trying to find some medicine to take.
But before she could reach for the pills, a sudden sweetness flooded her throat, and she violently coughed up a mouthful of blood.
The pills scattered all over the floor, and she pressed her hand to her chest, feeling a tearing, agonizing pain in her heart.
Suddenly, her phone rang. She weakly reached out to answer it.
On the other end, she heard Sean’s breathing, and for a moment, she was dazed. It reminded her of the times when they were in love-whenever she had a fever or wasn’t feeling well, she would instinctively cry and whine to him.
“Sean… it hurts so much…”
“It hurts… I think I’m going to die from the pain…”
On the other end, there was no response. After a long while, a cold, piercing voice finally broke through the earpiece and pierced her eardrum.
“Rachel, this kind of deceitful act is enough for one time.”
It was like a bucket of ice-cold water being poured over her head, and Rachel immediately snapped awake.
She looked at the name “Sean” on the call screen and suddenly realized what she had done.
She gasped for air, struggling to suppress the pain, and forced a smile, “I didn’t expect you to stop falling for it, Sean. It looks like you really don’t love me anymore.”
Not loving her was good.
Not loving her… was so good.
After that, Sean never returned home.
Rachel curled up in the cold room like an abandoned cat, emaciated and weak, her breath faint.
Her face had become so pale that it seemed almost transparent, with traces of blood at the corners of her lips. Her eyes were hollow, like a pool of stagnant water.
The only way she could see him was through Xena’s posts.
Those photos were like sharp knives, stabbing into her heart over and over.
Sean took Xena to their favorite dessert shop. In the photo, he fed Xena cake the same way he used to feed her, his gaze gentle and heartbreaking.
They watched a meteor shower, and Xena snuggled into his arms while Sean wrapped his coat around her, smiling as he stroked her hair.
The most painful photo was the one of them on the Ferris wheel.
Sean once said that couples who kissed at the top of the Ferris wheel would grow old together.
Now, he was kissing Xena at the top, his eyes full of love.
Rachel flipped through the photos again and again, her fingers trembling so much that she almost dropped her phone.
Her tears fell silently, landing on the screen and blurring Sean’s face.
That day, Xena returned.
She pushed open the door to Rachel’s room and looked down at the emaciated woman on the bed, her voice filled with mockery.
“Rachel, I know you’ve been looking at my posts. I’m sure you’ve seen how much Sean loves me these days, haven’t you?”
Rachel didn’t respond, only silently clutching the corner of the blanket.
Xena sneered and continued, “These days, Sean and I have been dating, getting intimate, going to bed, doing all the things couples do. I thought our relationship was deep enough, but he still refuses to talk about marriage.”
“I couldn’t understand why, but today, I finally found the answer.”
As she spoke the last words, there was a flash of resentment in Xena’s eyes. She ignored Rachel’s resistance and pulled her off the bed, dragging her out of the room.
Rachel’s body was so weak that she could barely stand, but Xena was merciless, dragging her like a rag doll and throwing her into a dark room.
“Bang!”
The harsh lights flickered on, and Rachel instinctively raised her hands to shield her eyes.
When her eyes adjusted to the light and she lowered her hands, the scene before her shocked her into silence.
