Three days before her euthanasia, Rachel went to the police station to cancel her household registration.
When the bright red stamp fell, so did her tears.
From that moment on, the only proof of her existence in this world was gone.
Two days before her euthanasia, Rachel returned alone to the high school she had attended with Sean.
Her hands, marked with needle scars, gently touched the trees along the avenue, the net frame of the basketball court, the desks and chairs in the classroom.
In a daze, she almost saw the seventeen-year-old boy again.
He had carried her on his back as they ran freely down the avenue, lifted her by the waist to make a shot, surrounded her with desks to kiss her recklessly.
She almost heard that seventeen-year-old boy whispering in her ear, telling her over and over that he liked her.
The day before her euthanasia, Rachel made one last trip to the cemetery to visit her parents.
Looking at the smiling faces on the tombstone, she forced a smile.
"Mom, Dad, wait for me."
"I'll come join you soon."
As the sunset cast a long shadow behind her, Rachel’s gaze suddenly fixed on something in the distance.
At the end of her line of sight, there was a man and a woman, their backs pressed closely together.
Just three days apart, but the pain and torment she had suffered had almost made her forget Sean’s face.
She stared at him, wanting to imprint his image into her memory forever.
From a distance, Sean, who was also there with Xena to visit his parents, finally noticed her.
He glanced at her, like he would any stranger, and then quickly turned away.
Rachel’s heart suddenly throbbed with a sharp pain. She couldn’t bear to stay any longer and turned to leave.
But the next moment, Xena suddenly called out to her.
"Rachel!"
Rachel stopped in her tracks, turning around in confusion.
A bright red wedding invitation was thrust into her view, with two names printed next to each other.
Bride: Xena.
Groom: Sean.
The matching names stung Rachel’s eyes, like a needle piercing her soul.
It felt like a distant memory-someone had once told her that when they got married, her name would be written first on the invitation.
It would mean that she would always be his first choice.
In her ears, Xena’s triumphant voice rang out.
"Sean may have kicked you out of the Harris family and said he never wanted to see you again, but those were just angry words.
After all, which master would want a servant bringing other men into their house to make a mess? I’ve already scolded him.
After all, you worked in the Harris family for years. Tomorrow, Sean and I are getting married. I hope you’ll come."
Married?
Rachel forced a smile. It seemed like she wouldn’t be able to go.
But in the end, she said nothing, simply took the invitation, and left silently.
On her way back to the hospital, she passed by the old rented apartment she had once shared with Sean.
The room, which had been empty back then, now glowed warmly with light. The curtains reflected two cozy figures.
As she stared at it in a daze, an elderly voice brought her thoughts back.
"It’s Rachel, isn’t it? It’s been years since you’ve come back. How’s your boyfriend from back then? Did you two get married?"
Rachel turned toward the voice and saw the old landlord smiling at her.
She smiled back.
"He’s doing well. We’re getting married soon."
Only, she wasn’t the bride.
The day of her euthanasia arrived, and Haicheng was unexpectedly sunny.
Rachel lay on the chair where the euthanasia was to be performed, watching as the drug slowly entered her body through the needle.
Gradually, her consciousness began to fade.
Just before she slipped into unconsciousness, her phone, which had been set aside, suddenly lit up.
On the screen, a long-missed black profile picture popped up with a message: "I’m getting married today. When will you come?"
Rachel tried to raise her hand, to pick up the phone and reply.
But the drug felt like invisible tentacles, desperately pulling her soul into the abyss.
She struggled, but in the end, she could not fight against that force.
As she closed her eyes forever, a single tear fell from the corner of her eye.
“I won’t come, Sean.”
“From now on… I’ll never appear before you again.”
