The warm atmosphere was shattered by the sudden ringtone. Sean gave Xena an apologetic smile.
He pulled out his phone and was about to hang up when Rachel's name suddenly appeared on the screen.
For some reason, Sean pressed the answer button.
On the other end of the line wasn’t Rachel’s weak voice, but rather the terrified voice of his assistant.
“Mr. Harris, Rachel... she’s dead!”
Immediately, Sean's mind went blank. It took him a long time to regain his voice. “What did you say?”
“Rachel just passed away through euthanasia. Her body has already been sent to the crematorium!”
Those simple words hit Sean like a sledgehammer, leaving him dizzy.
He couldn’t care about anything anymore.
He couldn’t care about the wedding still going on, the bride crying and shouting his name behind him, or the murmurs of the guests below.
Like a madman, he rushed out!
No, this couldn’t be true. It was absolutely impossible.
How could Rachel be dead? How could she have euthanasia?
That woman, so obsessed with weakness, so desperate to climb up at any cost, how could she die?
This had to be some sort of elaborate act, a scheme to ruin his wedding.
And once he fell for it, she would definitely jump out from somewhere, mocking his foolishness.
Though Sean thought this way, his body had already taken control, jumping into the car.
He couldn’t wait for the driver who was hurriedly chasing after him, so he endured the sharp pain in his left hand and slammed the steering wheel, speeding away.
On the rain-soaked elevated highway, a Maybach shot through the rain like an arrow.
After running several red lights, Sean finally reached the crematorium on the outskirts of the northern city.
In the empty hall, a body, covered by a white cloth, lay quietly on a stretcher.
The assistant beside it had a mournful expression, already confirming the identity of the deceased to Sean.
Though it was only a dozen steps away, it felt like Sean had walked a century.
With trembling hands, he lifted the white cloth, revealing Rachel’s pale face before his eyes.
Sean had seen many versions of Rachel.
The smiling Rachel, the crying Rachel, the frightened Rachel, the mocking Rachel...
But never had he seen this silent version of her.
Sean stood frozen in place for a long time, before finally croaking, “Is she really dead?”
The staff member who had just approached was used to this reaction. He simply handed Sean the death certificate.
“Miss Spencer chose euthanasia before her death, and the drug used was one of the most potent kinds. It only takes a second for the person to stop breathing completely.”
“Mr. Harris, I know Rachel’s death must be a shock to you, but the deceased has passed. Please accept our condolences.”
“Condolences?”
Sean, in a daze, shifted his gaze from the certificate back to Rachel’s body.
After a long silence, he suddenly sneered, “Rachel, you really are something.”
“Regretful after I kicked you out of the house? Now you’re pretending to be dead to get my sympathy? But I won’t fall for it!”
As he spoke, he reached to grab Rachel’s body, but no matter how hard he pulled, she remained unresponsive.
“Rachel, get up! Stop pretending!”
Staring at Rachel, who wouldn’t wake up no matter what, Sean suddenly felt a pain so intense he could barely breathe.
Rachel was dead. That woman who had despised him for his lack of career, and for his disabled hand, the woman who craved weakness, had finally died.
He should feel relieved.
Even though he had forcefully kept her by his side to torture her for life, her end would still be death.
But now, she had simply died earlier than expected. He should be out celebrating with fireworks.
So why did his heart hurt so much?
It hurt as if he were dying himself.
Tears suddenly welled up in the corners of Sean’s eyes. He no longer shook Rachel, but instead, tightly held her in his arms.
“Rachel, please, wake up. Please. If you wake up, I swear I won’t torture you anymore, I won’t hold a grudge over the past.”
This bizarre scene made the staff around him unable to watch any longer, and they quickly moved forward to stop him.
“Mr. Harris, please calm down. Don’t torment the body anymore.”
“The cremation is about to begin. Please let go of Miss Spencer and allow us to take her for cremation.”
The word “cremation” seemed to touch a nerve in Sean. He suddenly shouted at the staff in a frenzy, “Get out! Don’t touch her!”
“She’s not dead!”
