The day Rachel was buried, the weather was perfect, just like the day Sean first met her.
That year, when Sean, at sixteen, first saw Rachel, the soft sunlight illuminated her face, making her skin appear even fairer.
Her almond-shaped eyes smiled as she looked at him, and with a sweet voice, she said, “Hello, classmate. Nice to meet you. I’m Rachel.”
Now, ten years later, at twenty-six, Sean saw Rachel for the last time. The once vibrant person was now reduced to a handful of ashes, and even the urn carrying them felt weightless.
He watched the staff shovel pile after pile of earth onto the urn containing Rachel’s ashes. It was at this moment that he finally accepted the truth - Rachel was gone.
In truth, he had never wanted to think of it, nor had he wanted her to die.
When he first reunited with Rachel, he had been excited, but soon that excitement turned to fear.
He feared that Rachel would leave him again, just as she had five years ago. That’s why he had desperately kept her by his side, regardless of anything.
But once she was with him, he couldn't help but remember all the humiliation and abandonment he had suffered at her hands.
Love and hate twisted in his heart, and in the end, hate took over.
He began to sleep with various women in front of her, and when he saw the pain and collapse in her eyes, deep down, he regretted it. He thought about holding her like before, comforting her.
But in the end, his sympathy was swallowed by his hatred.
Sean was caught in this endless tug-of-war of love and hate until Rachel was diagnosed with cancer.
She understood his character so well that if she died just like that, he would follow her into death.
So, to make him live on, she began to act in a vain and superficial way again.
She slowly wore away the last bit of love he had for her, and then resolutely walked towards death.
After the funeral, the guests who had come to pay their respects gradually left, and only Sean remained.
He stared blankly at the photo of Rachel, smiling, on the newly erected tombstone, and like a man who had shed all pretense, he collapsed to the ground.
Clutching the tombstone tightly, his body shook violently, and he let out a sound from his throat, like a trapped animal's wail.
"Rachel, what should I do? I can’t hold on anymore..."
If, in the past, Sean had been able to cling to Rachel's urn to keep going, now that she was buried beneath the earth, he had no support left.
Even the room full of memories he had left for her had been consumed by fire the day she was driven away.
Sean stumbled aimlessly out of the cemetery.
He didn’t know where he was going, or if there was anywhere he could go.
All he knew was that he didn’t want to return to the cold, empty house that no longer had Rachel in it.
He didn’t know how long he walked or where he ended up.
Just then, a sharp scream suddenly came from a distance, drawing his attention.
When he looked up, he saw a woman in a wedding dress running desperately toward the crowd.
As she ran, she kept glancing back at the people chasing her. "Go away! All of you, go away! I won’t marry that fool from the Wang family!"
The crowd around them began to gossip.
"Poor thing, the Brown family’s daughter just got her engagement to the Harris family annulled, and now she’s being sold off to that fool from the Wang family!"
"I heard the Brown family's daughter wasn’t very favored, how did this happen..."
Someone was confused, but another person sneered, "No matter how favored she was, money is more important!"
"The Brown family is facing a major crisis. They’re lucky to have the Wang family as a lifeline, so of course, they have to hold on tight..."
Sean heard the gossip, but he didn’t react. He continued walking aimlessly.
Suddenly, the crowd screamed in fear.
"Get out of the way, people up ahead!"
"A car’s coming!"
Sean froze for a moment before realizing what was happening. He saw Xena, panicked and lost, stealing a car and stomping on the gas.
As a member of the Brown family, she was always served by a chauffeur when out, and she didn’t know how to drive. In her panic, she just drove aimlessly, knocking down pedestrians who couldn’t avoid her in time.
Xena still didn’t know how to brake, and after the tires spun in place, the car suddenly shot toward Sean.
"Boom!"
In the split second that Sean was flung into the air and landed, blood exploded like fireworks in front of him, blurring his vision.
The noisy sounds gradually faded, and countless hands seemed to pull his soul down to hell.
In the final moment, as his eyes closed, he seemed to see Rachel.
She stood before him, smiling, extending her hand toward him. "Sean, come with me."
"Okay."
Sean smiled faintly, struggling to reach out his hand.
The next moment, his outstretched hand fell heavily, and never moved again.
