After speaking, Rachel didn’t look at the reactions of the others. She grabbed her bag from the side and walked out.
“Rachel!”
Sean, not caring about anything else, quickly chased after her.
He ran for a long time before finally grabbing her hand.
“Let go.”
Rachel no longer played games. She directly ordered him.
In their past life, when Sean became overly clingy at home, she would speak to him in this tone.
Sean would behave like a wronged puppy, obediently releasing her and curling up in a corner.
Only when Rachel waved at him again would he jump into her arms.
But now, Rachel looked down at the large hand that was tightly gripping her wrist. Her wrist began to hurt and redden from the excessive force.
Yet Sean not only didn’t let go, but he also wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling Rachel completely into his embrace.
His eyes were bloodshot, his voice full of pain: “Rachel, how long are you going to be selfish?!”
“In our past life, you clearly loved me all along, but for my so-called good, you hid the truth of your departure for so long.
You got what you wanted, but did you ever think about how much I suffered? You could have told me everything, and we could have borne it together.”
“And now, in this life, you still love me, so why do you keep pushing me away? Do you want me to suffer to death before you’re satisfied?”
By the end, Sean’s voice even trembled, his words choking on his pain.
Rachel couldn’t bear it. She shut her eyes and forced herself to suppress the tears in her voice as she said, “Sean, what good is my love for you now?”
“My love can only offer you emotional comfort, a temporary refuge for your tired heart. But my love can’t help with your career. You’ll have to rely on yourself to fight for it.
And, as much as I wish otherwise, your parents, who raised you for years, will also be heartbroken. So, I can only ‘selfishly’ return you to them.”
“So, Sean, let’s be realistic. No matter how deep our love is, it means nothing in the face of family background, power, and wealth. We shouldn’t have met in the first place.”
With that, Rachel didn’t look at him again. She pulled his hand away and silently turned to leave.
Sean stood there like a statue, watching the woman he loved walk further and further away.
After that day, Rachel fell severely ill.
Worried, her parents quickly asked the school for an extended leave on her behalf.
Rachel lay weakly in bed, her pale face looking even more gaunt.
In her haze, she once again dreamed of events from her past life.
The dream was fragmented. At one point, it was Harris's father throwing money in her face and telling her to leave.
At another, it was Sean forcefully gripping her neck, repeatedly asking her whether she loved him.
Rachel wanted to answer that she loved him, but her mouth felt like it was sealed with glue, and she couldn’t say a word.
Later, in the dream, Rachel was finally able to speak. She wanted to shout out her love for Sean, but instead, she saw him holding another girl, coldly telling her that he no longer loved her.
He was returning to his original life and would marry someone of his own status.
Everything unfolded exactly as Rachel had imagined, but why did it hurt so much?
It hurt so badly that she could hardly breathe, her heart feeling like it was being crushed bit by bit.
Tears soaked her pillow, and Rachel, in a daze, opened her eyes. Unable to hold it in any longer, she began to sob uncontrollably.
Meanwhile, at the Harris family’s house, Sean’s heart was also in agony.
Ever since hearing the words Rachel had spoken that day, he had felt as though his soul had been torn away. He sat in a corner of his room, curled up in despair.
He had always thought that in their past life, Rachel didn’t love him enough, which was why she chose to leave him.
But now, he finally understood that it wasn’t that she didn’t love him, but that her love was too humble in the face of their vastly different social statuses.
Whether it was him lowering himself to her level, or her being forcefully pulled into his world, the disparity in their identities left them with little to talk about.
Over time, their communication dwindled, and eventually, even their love was worn down by the passage of time.
But he loved her, he truly did.
The thought of Rachel marrying someone else and having children in the future made him feel like he wanted to die.
But now, he had no way to stop it.
