After that day, Charlotte stayed locked up at home and never went out.
A week before the wedding, a friend dropped off tickets to a motorcycle race.
Her friend said it would help her relax before the big day.
Charlotte didn't want to be rude, so she went.
But at the race, she ran into Adrian and Jessica again.
Both were in racing gear, each straddling a bike. They looked like some perfect power couple.
Charlotte's heart clenched.
Adrian had zero interest in this kind of sport. The only reason he'd be here was to humor Jessica's hobby.
Charlotte spotted her friend waving from the stands and headed over. But as she passed the track, she heard screaming.
"Oh my God! Jessica's bike is out of control!"
Charlotte instinctively looked back and saw a motorcycle spinning wildly out of control, with Jessica clinging to the handlebars in panic.
Their eyes met.
Jessica suddenly jerked the wheel, and the bike roared straight toward Charlotte like a runaway horse.
It was too fast—Charlotte couldn't dodge it.
In that split second, Adrian shot out from the side. He had two choices: save Charlotte or save Jessica.
Everything seemed to slow down.
In a heartbeat, Charlotte watched Adrian leap through the air, pull Jessica into his arms, and roll them both to safety—leaving her right in the path of the crushing wheels.
The heavy bike slammed Charlotte to the ground, then toppled over and pinned her leg.
CRACK. The sound of shattering bone was sickeningly clear.
Agony hit her like a wave as she let out a strangled cry.
Before she blacked out, she saw Adrian holding Jessica protectively in his arms, not even glancing her way.
When she opened her eyes again, the first faces Charlotte saw were her stepmother and Jessica, looking fake-concerned.
"You're finally awake. You were out for two days—we were so worried."
Charlotte realized both her legs were in casts, suspended in the air.
She tried to move them but felt nothing.
Panic hit her as she grabbed Jessica's hand, her voice tight. "What's wrong with my legs?"
Jessica stammered and couldn't answer, just started crying.
Charlotte's panic grew. "Tell me! What happened to my legs?!"
The room filled with nothing but sobbing.
After a moment, her stepmother spoke with fake sadness:
"Severe compound fractures with nerve damage. The doctor said... you might never walk again."
Her brain went blank.
Charlotte went completely numb, unable to hear anything.
She shook all over, her eyes unfocused, mumbling, "That's impossible... this isn't real..."
Suddenly, she remembered what happened.
Her eyes went red as she grabbed Jessica's wrist hard, her voice hoarse. "You did it on purpose, didn't you?!"
Something flickered in Jessica's eyes, but she stayed quiet.
Charlotte couldn't hold back her rage anymore and screamed, "I saw you jerk the handlebars! The bike came straight at me—you did it on purpose!"
Jessica looked away, her voice all sweet and innocent. "I'm sorry, Charlotte. I get that you're upset about your legs, but you can't just accuse me without proof."
Seeing her complete denial, Charlotte felt sick.
In both lives, this woman pulled the same crap—hurt people then play victim when called out.
All her anger, old and new, exploded at once. "IT WAS YOU! STOP pretending—"
A cold voice cut her off.
"Miss Pierce, it was just an accident. Nobody wanted this to happen."
Charlotte froze.
She looked over to see Adrian standing in the doorway, holding a bouquet, his expression unreadable.
Suddenly, all the anger drained from her face, leaving only numbness.
"Get out. Everyone get out!"
Dead silence. The three of them exchanged glances and quietly left.
Before leaving, Adrian gently placed the flowers on her bedside table.
His throat bobbed, but he finally didn't say anything and closed the door behind him.
Once they were gone, Charlotte grabbed the bouquet and hurled it at the wall.
Petals scattered everywhere.
