He nodded without hesitation. "Yes, I've liked you since the first time I saw you on the playground."
His voice softened as he continued, "Back then, I just watched you from afar. When I found out you were in Class 2, I begged my family to pull strings to get me transferred."
A faint smile touched his lips. "But you wouldn't remember. You were always buried in your books."
His expression darkened slightly. "Remember those punks who harassed you? I'd been following you for weeks, making sure you got home safe every night. That day just gave me an excuse to play the hero."
Tyler chuckled, but his eyes were serious. "What can I say? I fell for you the moment I saw you. You're the only woman I've ever loved."
Then, the humor faded. His face crumpled with regret.
"I'm sorry—for all the years I let you suffer. I spent my life chasing perfection in everything else, but I failed you and Charlie." His voice cracked. "God, I wish I could go back. Do it all over with you."
His eyes were drowning in guilt.
I stayed silent.
"Wendy." His voice was barely a whisper now, weak and fading. "I don't have much time left. I know I don't deserve it, but... just answer me one thing."
He searched my face desperately. "Will you forgive me?"
I held his gaze for a long moment.
Finally, I shook my head. "No."
The last flicker of hope in his eyes died.
He managed a broken smile. "I'm sorry."
Tears slipped down his cheeks.
One last apology.
Then his heart stopped.
Just like that—he was gone.
The Ford family rushed in, their wails tearing through the room.
And I walked away, silent amid the chaos.
Tyler's story was over.
Mine was just beginning.
