The more Mulock watched his human fight the monster before him, the more the massive swell of pride seemed to build in his chest.
Wheeler had perfected every spell they'd practiced, skillfully blocking each attack from the beast with ease.
Just as the fight was starting to amp up however, a large man suddenly sat down in front of him, his leg blocking the entirety of Mulock's view.
Mister Pumpernickel let out a loud croak from on top of his head.
"Yes," Mulock snapped, "I can see he's blocking us. Thank you for that astute observation."
The toad answered with another, slightly more annoyed, croak.
"Oh, piss off. I could've just left you at the hotel, you ungrateful little bastard."
Mister Pumpernickel thankfully shut up after that. Still grumbling, Mulock slipped out from beneath the seat, glancing around the nearly empty arena. "Alright," he muttered, "at least there's plenty of other options." He leapt and bounded over a few seats, finally finding another clear view of the tank.
Wheeler had begun to move into the offensive phase of the strategy they'd devised, adjusting his spells to drain the tank itself which would eventually leave the creature inept.
And that's when a massive, giant of a student suddenly sat down directly in front of him.
"Oh for fuck's sake," Mulock hissed.
Mister Pumpernickel croaked.
"Stop acting so offended. Wheeler isn't around," Mulock muttered. "I can swear properly."
Another croak.
"Yes, I know he's not a child and I can say what I want around him. But he never swears so then I feel bad."
Mister Pumpernickel let out a series of croaks at this causing Mulock to roll his eyes.
"Uuugh, would you shut up. God, it's literally impossible to have a conversation with you."
That toad could be such an asshole sometimes.
Feeling ready to claw someone's eyes out, Mulock began to search (yet again) for another viewing location. Finally his gaze fell to the line of professors diligently taking notes. Aha! No one would dare sit in front of them.
Quickly the demon cat slipped through the rows of seats, finally crawling beneath the bench where the professors were seated. At last his head popped out from under it, right next to Milton Slengeborn's scrawny twig of a leg.
Ah, now this was the perfect view. Here he could clearly witness his little human victoriously finish his exam. Mulock glanced at the hourglass, smirking to himself. And in record time too.
Wheeler normally seemed so bubbly and awkward, but fighting the beast he looked completely different. His curls floated wildly around his head as he moved through the water, his expression focused and alert, each movement graceful and calculated.
He looked like some kind of young mythical hero, not a goofy, wide-eyed kid.
Blazing within those eyes was so much passion and courage that Mulock couldn't seem to look away. He'd only known one other person with eyes like that.
The demon immediately caught himself.
As much as he'd despised that Yureka woman, she'd been right. History did tend to repeat itself. No matter what, Mulock couldn't go down that path again, regardless of how beautiful those bright sea-green eyes may be.
Wait...beautiful...?
What the hell?
He hadn't just thought Wheeler's eyes were beautiful, had he?
Mulock shook his head, eyes narrowing. Well, he supposed they were...objectively speaking. But that was all. He proceeded to banish any other thoughts on the subject far to the back of his mind.
Mulock was so focused on Wheeler that he didn't notice the headmistress's arrival until she suddenly sat down beside Milton.
Mulock grimaced, now caged in place with a leg on either side. Great. Just what he needed. What the hell was with his shit luck today?
That's when the headmistress suddenly spoke, lowering her voice. "He's incredible, isn't he?"
"Indeed," Milton replied. "And it's not just his powers. The precision and skill he has...I've never seen anything like it before. He's perfected every spell he's cast. That boy might just be the most talented student to pass through the academy since the Grand Emperor."
"Fitting, isn't it?"
"Quite."
Their gazes fell back to Wheeler.
The boy had drained the entirety of the tank by now but was currently creating a bubble of water around the creature. That way, despite being immobile, the monster could still breathe.
"He's too compassionate," Vera murmured. "That could be a problem."
"The boy is becoming a powerful mage," Milton replied flatly. "He'll learn better soon enough. We all do."
"I sent him to see Yureka," Vera said.
"And?"
"It's exactly as we thought. He's the one."
Milton didn't react verbally, but Mulock could feel his leg tense beside him.
"He has the mark," Vera continued, "and if that wasn't proof enough, Yureka actually spoke to him."
"So that means..."
"Yes, there's no doubt about it. We found the Lucky Seven."
A long silence fell between the two for a moment.
"Do we tell him?" Milton finally asked.
Despite the vagueness of the words, Mulock had a feeling the professor wasn't talking about Wheeler.
"No, not yet," Vera replied. "The longer we keep the boy here, the more he owes us for perfecting his protege."
Milton chuckled under his breath, but there was no emotion behind it. "Always the astute opportunist, aren't you, Vera?"
The headmistress offered him a thin smile in return. "How else do you think I got here, my dear?"
