Blake didn't waste another word. He ignored Sophia's hysterical sobbing and walked out of the private room.
As he left, a server handed him a USB drive.
Back in his car, he stared at the drive with dark eyes.
Everything he owed Riley, he'd pay back. One thing at a time.
His phone rang. He glanced at the caller ID before answering.
"Mr. Harrison, we confirmed Ms. Lawson left the city and went back to her hometown."
"Fine."
Riley's parents lived back home. The second she'd disappeared, he'd known that's where she'd go.
These past few days without Riley had been hell.
Blake felt like he'd blown the most important deal of his life—restless, miserable, and completely lost.
Because he wasn't sure if this particular deal had a replacement.
He'd catch himself staring at her things around the house.
Thinking about how she'd be sitting at her vanity right now, or washing her hair in the shower around this time.
Because of something he'd said years ago, Riley had never let her hair grow past her shoulders since high school.
He'd wanted to tell her so many times—
Riley, you looked most beautiful with long hair.
She'd been his first real crush. His first fantasy. His first everything.
Blake's fists slammed into the steering wheel, the horn blaring.
Why couldn't he admit his feelings for her when she was right there?
Blake had always loved his freedom. He didn't want to be tied down.
He'd assumed that no matter what, whenever he turned around, Riley would always be there.
But this time, when he turned around...
She was gone.
His assistant heard the car horn blaring through the phone but didn't dare interrupt.
Finally, Blake's voice came through again.
"Send out that video I'm forwarding you. Tell HR to terminate Sophia's contract immediately. And I want her blacklisted from every company in the city."
His assistant quickly agreed, then started to ask if there was anything else, but Blake seemed to drift off again.
After what felt like forever, his voice came through, distant and thoughtful:
"Set up the most expensive wedding you can imagine. The most expensive dress, the most expensive flowers—everything has to be the absolute best money can buy."
He hung up after rattling off instructions.
Now he had to get to Sotheby's to bid on that pink diamond he'd been watching—the perfect engagement ring for Riley.
Their first wedding had been total garbage. He'd fed her some line about wanting to "keep things private," but really he'd just known Riley would accept whatever scraps he gave her.
This time, he was going to give the love of his life everything she deserved.
Just picturing it made his heart race.
He couldn't believe it took him this long to figure out—the woman he'd been searching for his entire life had been right there the whole time.
Riley was dragged out of bed at the crack of dawn by Sophie, who basically packed her onto a plane while she was still half-asleep.
She'd figured Sophie was taking her to some fancy auction at Sotheby's to buy expensive jewelry.
But after they landed and crashed for the night, Sophie just dragged her to the mall for a massive shopping spree.
The bodyguards trailing behind them were loaded down with shopping bags.
Riley got roped into buying way more than she wanted. Every time she tried to pay, Sophie would swoop in with a credit card.
"Today's shopping trip is courtesy of a certain someone, so don't even think about trying to save him money."
Sophie winked at her.
Riley immediately knew whose idea this whole getaway had been.
Ever since discovering Ethan's feelings, she'd been a complete mess.
She couldn't deal with the fact that he'd been silently in love with her for years.
She was shocked, sure, but mostly she felt like total garbage.
Ethan was amazing. Like, genuinely perfect.
And she'd wasted decades chasing after some other guy, giving him everything while Ethan watched from the sidelines.
He'd seen her at rock bottom. Hell, he'd been the one taking care of her after she lost the baby.
The guilt was eating her alive.
So she'd started avoiding him.
Ethan was way too sharp not to notice. This whole trip was probably his way of giving her space to get her head straight.
Which just made her feel even shittier about spending his money.
Seeing she wasn't going to budge, Sophie finally dropped it.
She just felt terrible for her brother—this whole courtship thing was going to be an uphill battle.
When Sophie stepped outside to take a call, she spotted a familiar figure across the street.
She did a double-take and her stomach dropped.
Blake fucking Harrison.
She immediately speed-dialed Ethan.
After she filled him in, there was dead silence on the other end.
Finally, his voice came through, calm as ever:
"Got it."
"That's it? Just 'got it'? Aren't you worried Riley might go back with him? I've been hearing all kinds of crazy shit about what's going down back home!"
While Sophie was freaking out, Ethan sounded almost relaxed.
"She won't go with him."
