The plane soared into the clouds and soon vanished into the pitch-black night sky.
On the other side, Adam finally came to a stop. After more than two hours, he felt a thorough sense of relief from the inside out.
Yet, beneath that relief, a faint trace of guilt lingered in his heart.
Normally, cheating was one thing, but tonight was supposed to be Veda's cesarean section. They said a woman giving birth was like walking through the gates of hell, and yet, as Veda stepped through those gates, he hadn't been able to resist temptation...
The more Adam thought about it, the more he felt like a scoundrel. But he couldn't help it—he was a man with physical needs. With Veda ill these days, he'd been by her side nonstop, with no time to seek out other women to satisfy himself.
He'd been holding back for a full week. Any longer and he would've burst. This kind of thing was like blocking a river—better to dredge than dam. Bottling it up only made the desire grow stronger. Once fulfilled, it faded away.
Adam justified himself internally, he'd merely made a mistake all men in the world were prone to. It was nothing. Besides, when he sought women outside, it was always just physical—never emotional. His heart would always belong to his wife!
So this wasn't even cheating. How could satisfying a physical need be called cheating? True betrayal was the soul turning away from a lover. A body straying occasionally was just animal instinct.
After this self-consolation, Adam felt much better. He quickly dressed while pulling out his phone to call his assistant, "Tom, I don't care what time it is—get up right now and find me the most expensive set of jewelry. A set, not a single piece. Necklace, bracelet, earrings, even an anklet—everything."
"It should have diamonds on it. The bigger and rarer the diamonds, the better. Price is no object. Have it delivered to me first thing tomorrow morning. Veda has just given birth. By tomorrow morning, I hope she can see the gift I've prepared for her as soon as she opens her eyes."
"Also, prepare gold bracelets and longevity locks for the baby. All gold pieces must be mother-child matching sets. Whatever the baby has, my honey must have an identical set. I want her to know, even with the baby, she's still my one and only princess. My love will always be hers, and she'll always come first. The baby can only be second!"
With that, he hung up. Oddly enough, spending money worked wonders—his guilt-ridden heart felt instantly lighter.
By then, he was fully dressed. Earlier, during his tryst with Daisy, he'd carefully removed his suit, folded it neatly aside, fearing any stains or wrinkles might tip off Veda once she woke. Now, slipping it back on, the suit remained crisp. Clad in it, he instantly regained the poise of a business elite, with no hint of his recent indiscretion.
"Leaving now?" Daisy pouted as he headed for the door, her tone acidic.
"Always the same—sleep with me, then vanish. What am I to you, anyway?"
Adam paused at the door, glancing back coldly. "Know your place. You're nothing to me."
"The only reason I keep you around is for your... versatility in bed. Don't delude yourself into thinking I'll ever love you. I've told you a hundred times, my heart belongs only to Veda. There's no room for anyone else."
