With that icy remark, Adam left, leaving Daisy disheveled, seething with resentment on the floor—furious yet powerless.
After leaving, Adam rushed straight to the operating room. But the surgery was long over. The large room was empty save for nurses tidying up. Veda and the doctors were nowhere to be seen.
Adam froze. What's going on? Where's Veda? Where's the baby?!
"Miss, the doctor called to say my wife was having surgery here, but there's no one around,” he asked, flustered. “Where is she? The baby? And the doctors who operated on her—where did they go?"
The nurse lifted her eyes, glaring at him irritably. "You're Veda's husband? The surgery ended three hours ago. Why are you here now?"
Adam couldn't admit he'd been with his lover, so he lied, "I... I had an emergency at the company..."
Before he could finish, the nurse cut him off. "Funny. Mr. Big Shot, do you even know the time? It's 4:30 a.m.! What company makes you work at 4 a.m.?"
Adam, born into wealth and raised as a business prodigy, had always been fawned over. He'd never been mocked so sharply.
"Who do you think you are, speaking to me like that?" His voice turned icy. "Nash Group has countless international deals. Time zones exist, you know? It's 4 a.m. here, but 9 a.m. in another country!"
He paused, impatiently. "You should be grateful it's my wife's delivery day. I don't want to bicker with someone like you on such a happy occasion... Get your director here. You're not worthy of speaking to me."
A cold male voice suddenly sounded behind him, "If she's not worthy, am I?"
Adam froze, spinning around in disbelief. "Brother? What are you doing here?"
Standing behind him was none other than Veda's older brother, Bob Welch.
He was a soldier, mostly stationed in the military, only returning home briefly for Christmas. Even Veda rarely saw him, so Adam was stunned to find him here.
"Hmph. When my sister gives birth, there should be a man who can step up," he said coldly. "Since you couldn't, I had to."
His words dripped with disdain.
Adam looked awkward. A husband absent during his wife's delivery was inexcusable, and he couldn't blame his brother-in-law for being angry.
"It's all my fault," he said, cowed in front of the soldier. "But Brother, I swear I'm not completely negligent. These past few days, I've been by her side nonstop while she was ill. Ask her—even at night, I sat beside her bed, jumping up the second she stirred to get her water."
"With all that, I neglected my company, and a major international project collapsed. The investors were furious, demanding an urgent video call. But the signal in the hospital hallway was terrible—I had no choice but to go downstairs to deal with those foreigners."
"I finished the call as fast as I could and rushed back... but I still missed it. Veda's surgery was already over..."
