Connor softened because of Maya's tear. "Fine, you're injured so I won't push it. Just apologize to Serena and we'll call it even."
"Apologize?" Maya laughed bitterly. "Why the hell should I apologize? Connor, what are you gonna do to me if I don't?"
"Maya!" Connor clenched his fists, then loosened them after a few seconds, looking at Maya with cold eyes.
"I've spoiled you too much all these years—that's why you keep hurting people without any remorse."
He turned to Serena. "Serena, this isn't your fault. Your kindness won't be appreciated. This time, I'll handle this myself."
Maya was locked in the basement.
When the servants dragged her down, they weren't gentle—her back wounds tore open again, blood soaking through her thin shirt until it was a bloody mess.
The basement was damp and freezing cold, and Maya developed a high fever. Her body alternated between burning hot and ice cold, and combined with the excruciating pain from her torn back, she felt like she was in hell.
Maya was an orphan.
As a child, she had endured a lot of pain and injuries, leaving many scars on her body.
But ever since she met Connor, he would cry over the scars on her body and lose sleep over her past suffering.
He felt her pain as his own.
To heal the scars from her childhood, he took her to numerous beauty clinics.
He said someone as beautiful as her shouldn't have any scars on her body—she was pure and flawless.
But now, the wounds on her back kept tearing open, and every single scar on her body came from him.
People's hearts change easily, and Connor was no exception.
The basement was dark and lightness. Maya kept fainting from her injuries and waking up again, then fainting once more. She had no idea how many days had passed, only that the pain in her body hadn't lessened one bit.
She was too weak to swallow the food the servants brought her.
In her delirious state, she dreamed of her daughter still lying alone in the public cemetery, and instantly a strong will to survive made her abandon her meaningless pride.
Connor no longer believed her, so why should she keep fighting for her dignity?
She abandoned her last bit of stubbornness, and when the servant brought food, she crawled over with difficulty and grabbed their hand. "Tell Connor, I'll apologize."
Maya was brought out by the servant.
Connor and Serena were in the living room playing with Emma. Emma was running around and bumped into Maya, who had just been brought out.
Maya's knees gave out and she collapsed to the floor.
Connor stepped forward to help her up, but just as he reached out his hand, he pulled it back. With a stern face, he said, "You're ready to apologize now?"
"Yeah." Maya kept her head down, not looking at Connor. Supporting her frail body, she turned toward Serena. "Miss Serena, I'm sorry. I was wrong. It's my fault. I shouldn't have hurt you.
I shouldn't have hurt Emma either, and I shouldn't have argued with Connor... I'm sorry to all of you..."
She numbly recited the apology, and after finishing the last sentence, she passed out again.
"Maya!" This time Connor couldn't help but rush forward and hold the unconscious Maya.
Maya woke up in the hospital, with Connor sitting by the bedside, his attitude much gentler than before. "You're awake."
"Yeah," Maya responded.
Connor looked at Maya's gaunt appearance and lovingly brushed the hair from her forehead. "If you had admitted you were wrong earlier, you wouldn't have gotten hurt so badly."
He sighed again. "Maya, you really need to work on that temper of yours. Don't keep acting out like this anymore, okay?"
