Maya noticed that besides herself, there was also a girl who came every day. Sometimes she arrived earlier than Maya, sometimes later, but Maya could always see her.
Maya occasionally wanted to go say hello, but as soon as she opened her mouth, the girl would immediately walk away, as if deliberately avoiding getting close to people.
She asked her neighbors about the girl and learned that her name was Lily, she lived at the end of the village with her father.
Lily's mother had killed herself two years ago because she couldn't take her husband's constant drinking and beatings. After her mom died, nobody looked after Lily since her dad was drunk all the time and didn't give a damn about her.
Besides getting beaten by her father, Lily hadn't been to school in six months.
The villagers felt sorry for her and often tried to help, but Lily's dad was a piece of shit who didn't care about his daughter and wouldn't let anyone else help her either.
Once when a neighbor had Lily stay for lunch, her father showed up that afternoon demanding money, claiming the food had made Lily sick. When Lily wouldn't help him scam the neighbor, he beat the crap out of her.
The neighbor couldn't stand it and gave the guy two hundred bucks to make him stop.
Since then, Lily kept her distance from everyone, saying she didn't want to get people in trouble. It was heartbreaking how considerate she was.
After Maya heard about Lily's situation, she couldn't help but look at her more and would actively go up to say hello, occasionally bringing snacks to give to Lily.
Lily refused at first, but then Maya told Lily that her dad wouldn't know about what happened at the cemetery.
Only then did Lily relax and stop worrying, accepting Maya's kindness.
After leaving the cemetery, they would sit together on the hillside, enjoying the breeze and chatting. Lily was thoughtful and well-behaved, and Maya's heartache was gradually healed by her presence.
Each day at the cemetery, besides visiting her daughter, Maya would chat with Lily.
One day, Maya waited for Lily all morning on the hillside, but Lily never showed up.
Maya felt uneasy, and thinking about what her neighbor had said, she worried even more about Lily's situation.
She couldn't help but go to Lily's house, and from far away she could hear Lily's cries coming from inside.
She hurried over and knocked hard on the courtyard gate.
As soon as the gate opened, a sharp smell of alcohol hit her face.
The drunk man glared at Maya. "Who're you looking for?"
Maya looked past the man and saw Lily collapsed in the courtyard, with bruises on her face and arms. Anger surged through her instantly.
Maya pushed the man aside and rushed into the courtyard to hold Lily. "How can you hit her!"
"Who the fuck are you? I'm disciplining my own daughter! Mind your own damn business!" The man staggered with rage, waving the belt in his hand. "Get the hell out of here if you know what's good for you, or I'll beat your ass too!"
"Aunt Maya, please go! Just go..." Lily urgently pushed Maya away, not wanting her to get dragged into this.
Maya took Lily's hand. "No way! I can't leave you here alone! We're leaving together."
Hearing Maya's words made the man even angrier. "She's my kid—who the hell's gonna take her from me? Oh wait, I know what this is. You're some creep trying to kidnap my daughter! Then don't blame me for what happens next!"
The man turned the tables on her, then swung the belt toward Maya.
Maya instinctively held Lily tighter, using her own back to shield her from harm.
