Maya's heart, already full of holes, finally felt a trickle of sweet spring water flow in because of her decision, letting in warm sunlight that hadn't been there for far too long.
She was finally willing to take a step forward, to free herself from purgatory.
"Aunt Maya!" Hearing Maya's words, Lily rushed over and hugged her tightly, never wanting to let go again.
"Lily." Maya held Lily, and the tense nerves in her body finally relaxed. But then piercing pain shot through her leg. She cupped Lily's face, clearly wanting to say something, but the next second everything went black and she collapsed.
"Maya!" Ethan rushed over.
Maya didn't hit the ground—she was caught by an embrace.
She didn't know how long she'd slept, but this time she didn't have nightmares. Her dreams were no longer filled with her daughter's cries for help—she heard Lily calling her name and saw Ethan catching her as she was about to fall.
When she woke up, her eyes weren't filled with tears like before. She slowly opened her eyes and immediately saw Ethan beside the hospital bed.
"You're awake."
"Yeah." Maya struggled to sit up. Ethan quickly came over to help her, and after she was settled, he sighed helplessly. "You were obviously hurt but you lied about it. You have no idea how scared I was when I saw you faint."
"Ethan, I'm thirsty." Maya felt guilty and deflected with an excuse.
Ethan handed Maya a cup of water. "I kept it warm in case you were thirsty when you woke up."
"Thanks." After drinking the water, Maya asked, "Where's Lily?"
"She's fine, just tired. The village chief took her home." Ethan hesitated before asking, "Maya, do you really want to adopt Lily?
You should know that adopting a child isn't that simple. You'll be responsible for everything about her from now on. Raising a kid by yourself will be really hard—it won't be easy for you."
"I know." Maya looked at Ethan calmly. "I had a child once. I know how difficult it is to raise one."
Ethan fell silent.
Maya continued, "Ethan, I've never told the villagers about my past, but I know you guys might have wondered about it."
"I didn't want to talk about it before, but now I want to tell you everything."
"Okay. If you want to share, I'm listening." Ethan sat down beside the bed, quietly watching Maya.
By the end, the sun was setting.
Maya smiled faintly. "Now you know everything about me.
I also have something else to tell you.
Ethan, I know how you feel about me, but we're not right for each other.
I don't have any expectations for love anymore, and now I'm going to adopt Lily. You have so many better options. You're still young—you'll meet someone who truly makes your heart race."
Ethan's gaze was calm, and he didn't say anything more.
Maya assumed Ethan's silence meant he agreed with her. She felt somewhat relieved, but also strangely disappointed and bitter—emotions that surprised even herself.
She quickly pushed those feelings down.
Three days later, Maya was discharged from the hospital. Ethan and Lily came to pick her up together.
Ethan then took them to handle the adoption paperwork.
Lily changed her last name and would now be called Maya Lily, and Maya moved from her rental to Lily's house.
The villagers were happy for Lily and specially organized a feast in the village.
