"I can protect you too."
Maya's inner turmoil was easily soothed by Lily's words. She smiled and nodded. "Okay."
"Come on, let's cook first." Ethan acted as if the person outside the gate didn't exist, leading Maya into the kitchen and asking what dishes she wanted to make.
He didn't deliberately say anything comforting, but somehow made Maya's heart feel calm.
Maya stopped paying attention to whoever was outside the gate. She followed Ethan into the kitchen, assigned him tasks, and prepared the meal herself.
Over an hour later, the food was ready. Maya went to call Lily while Ethan brought the dishes inside. The three of them ate peacefully as usual.
After the meal, the village committee called Ethan. He immediately asked for leave, saying he had something urgent and couldn't come in that afternoon.
Maya knew he was worried about her, but she couldn't stay inside this courtyard forever. Since Connor had managed to find her, she couldn't hide for the rest of her life either.
"Ethan, go to work. I can handle this." Maya said.
One meal's worth of time was enough for her to calm her emotions, and it was also enough for her to find the courage to face Connor.
Ethan looked at her with concern. "Are you sure you can?"
"Yes, I can." Maya nodded firmly.
So Ethan stopped insisting. He trusted Maya—someone who had been through all of this wasn't just someone who could only hide behind him for protection. He just needed to tell Maya: "I got it. I'll head to the village committee in a bit. But I want you to know that I'm always here. Anytime, just one phone call and I'll come over."
"Okay." Maya smiled softly. Ethan's words felt like armor around her.
Before, when facing Connor, she only had a heart worn out by exhaustion and a body wracked with pain. But now, facing Connor, she had protection—she wouldn't get hurt so easily again.
Maya opened the courtyard gate.
Connor, who had been standing outside, immediately stepped forward. "Maya, you finally opened the door. I knew you wouldn't have the heart to keep avoiding me forever. Maya, I have so much I want to say to you."
Maya ignored Connor completely. She walked Ethan to the gate. "Take care of yourself at work too."
"I will." Ethan responded gently, his eyes filled with unmistakable affection. "I'm heading out now. Call me if anything happens."
"Okay." Maya watched Ethan's figure as he walked away.
In that moment, she realized how much she'd come to depend on Ethan, and felt an impulse to ask him to stay by her side.
Connor stared at Ethan's retreating figure with a dark expression, hostility radiating from his entire body. "Who is he? What's your relationship?"
"None of your business." Maya looked at Connor coldly, her face full of impatience. "What gives you the right to come looking for me? What gives you the right to say these things?"
"Maya, I'm your husband."
"Your wife Maya is already dead—died in a fall. I just happen to have the same name and look a little like your wife, but other than that, I have nothing to do with you. And I heard your wife was driven to her death by you."
Each of Maya's words reminded Connor that he had long lost any right to come looking for her.
When Connor heard Maya's last sentence, his whole body involuntarily staggered. His face was filled with regret as he looked at Maya in anguish.
