"Maya, I know I did a lot of things wrong in the past. I understand your anger, I get your resentment. But what married couple doesn't fight? That doesn't mean I don't love you.
I was just too stupid before—that's why I misunderstood you, why I made such terrible mistakes.
I'm not here hoping you'll forgive me right away. I'm just asking for a chance—just one chance to be by your side again. I'll do whatever you want, wait however long it takes."
Maya looked at Connor's display of deep emotion with complete disgust.
"I just want you to stop hanging around my front door and disrupting my normal life.
I don't want any connection with you for the rest of my life."
Maya didn't give Connor another chance to speak. She called Lily and they went to town together to buy the comic book Lily had been wanting.
"Maya!" Connor screamed her name hoarsely from behind, his anguished voice echoing through the entire alley.
Maya no longer felt any sympathy or softness toward his displays of repentance, pain, or pitifulness. She knew Connor's cold-blooded nature better than anyone.
When he loved someone, he could pluck the stars from the sky and lay them at her feet. When he didn't love someone, he could destroy their entire life.
His love and hate were both too cheap and could switch at any moment—stabbing you with a knife wrapped in the name of love while proclaiming how much he loved you.
He performed devotion in front of others, making it seem like Maya was the ungrateful one. But no one would ever know how much Maya had suffered.
"Aunt Maya, are you unhappy?" Lily asked quietly.
Maya smiled and shook her head. "No, just remembering some not-so-pleasant memories."
"Then don't think about those bad things. Aunt Maya, I'll always stay by your side and keep you company. I'll protect you." Lily looked determined. "And that man at our front door—if he dares hurt you, I definitely won't let him get away with it!"
Having experienced so much hardship herself, Lily was more mature and stronger than most children her age. When faced with sudden difficulties, her first instinct was to protect Maya, not to shrink back.
Maya ruffled her hair. "Silly girl, you don't send kids to the front lines. Don't worry, everything will be fine. Come on, let's go pick out comics."
"Okay!" Lily nodded vigorously, and because of Maya's reassurance, she finally showed a relieved smile.
On the way back, Maya guessed that Connor would probably still be waiting outside her gate. She knew this would be a prolonged battle—she'd seen Connor's persistence before.
However, when they returned to the village, Maya discovered that besides Connor, her neighbors were also gathered outside her gate.
When they saw Maya return, they came forward with bright smiles.
"Maya, you're back."
"Maya, so you were already married! You just had a fight with your husband and came here to hide."
"Maya, ever since you came to our village, all of us have grown to love you. But since your family has come looking for you, you should go back with him. Life has to go on. He made mistakes, but he's learned to change during this time."
