Maya looked at everyone in shock, then at Connor walking toward her with flowers, her face guarded. "What did you tell them?"
"Maya, don't resist me like this. I just told them our story. I made mistakes, but I've learned to repent. If you leave with me, I'm willing to invest thirty million to develop the village.
This is my thanks to everyone for taking care of you during this time, my goodwill toward the village, and a way to show my sincerity.
Of course, I'm not trying to use money to make up for past mistakes—I just want you to look at me and give me a chance."
Maya looked at the villagers, who were all smiling.
Their intentions weren't entirely about money—they wanted Maya to be happy while also feeling that a man willing to spend so much money showed real respect for a woman.
"What are you all doing gathered here? Everyone disperses!" Ethan had somehow rushed over.
He had dirt on his clothes and hadn't had time to remove his straw hat—clearly he'd just come back from the farm.
Since coming from the capital to become a village official, he'd completely lost any trace of being a rich young master, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to village development and thinking only of the villagers.
He'd invested quite a bit of his own money too, but always had the village chief keep it secret—never telling anyone.
The village chief followed behind Ethan, also waving his hand for everyone to leave and stop making a scene.
Someone wasn't happy to hear this. "Village chief, how can you say we're making a scene? We're doing this for Maya's good. It's hard for her raising Lily alone. Now her husband has come looking for her and even says he'll accept Lily too—isn't that great?"
"Yeah, yeah, he's really sincere." A neighbor lady said earnestly, "Maya, I want you to be happy too."
"Maya can make her own decisions. She'll handle this herself—she doesn't need any of us worrying about it. Everyone go home." Ethan rarely showed a cold face to everyone.
He naturally had a cool appearance, but because he usually smiled, he gave people a warm feeling. Now with a cold expression, he actually looked quite intimidating.
"Ethan, everyone knows you like Maya, so that's why they're saying these things. But they are husband and wife after all—no matter how much you like her, you can't make decisions for Maya."
"Right, right, you can't break up someone's family."
The villagers tried to persuade him, and in just a few words they'd turned Ethan into a homewrecker.
Connor immediately seized the opportunity. "Mr. Gray, this is between me and my wife. I hope you won't interfere."
Seeing the conflict being shifted onto Ethan, Maya stopped staying silent. "Lily, go inside first. Aunt Maya needs to handle some things." Maya looked down at Lily.
Lily hesitated but nodded, though before going inside she didn't forget to say, "Aunt Maya, if you need me to protect you, make sure to call me."
"Okay, I will."
Only then did Lily go inside with peace of mind.
Maya glanced at Connor, then at everyone else, asking, "Everyone, I'm curious how Mr. Mitchell told you about my past with him?"
Ethan understood what Maya wanted to do and quickly moved to her side. "You don't have to bring up the past if you don't want to. I don't care what they think of me."
