Maya looked at Ethan with tender eyes. "I care."
Ethan was stunned, his eyes showing both surprise and joy, but then more heartache. "Maya, I don't want you to relive past pain."
"But I'm not in pain. I don't care about the past anymore—that's something that already happened. I just don't want anyone to whitewash what he did and let him escape responsibility for his past mistakes."
After Maya finished speaking, someone in the crowd spoke up.
"Mr. Mitchell told us everything that happened. The child's accident was just that—an accident, and he knows he was wrong."
"Yeah, and he pursued you for so many years back then, overcame all obstacles to be with you. His feelings for you were genuine."
"When couples face difficulties, they should support each other through them. He feels guilty about your daughter's death too—you can't leave him to face that kind of pain alone."
As everyone chimed in with their opinions, Maya felt even more contempt for Connor.
She looked at Connor mockingly.
Connor lowered his head guiltily, but when he looked up again, the guilt was gone, replaced by a determined and affectionate expression.
"Maya, I really know I was wrong. Please just give me this chance. Come back with me. Don't let our issues affect other people anymore, and don't let Mr. Gray be misunderstood."
If this were before, Maya would have swallowed the bitter pill, would have acted like nothing happened just like four years ago, married Connor, and let everyone assume Connor's deep love and devotion to her.
But now she could see through everything.
"Connor, you don't know you were wrong at all.
If you knew you were wrong, you wouldn't still be lying through your teeth while apologizing.
Four years ago, when you apologized, you never told anyone what you actually did wrong either. You kept all your shameful acts to yourself and dumped them on me, and I actually believed what you said.
How is it that you only dare tell everyone how devoted you were to me back then, but you don't mention that you cheated before our wedding and got another woman pregnant?
And after I forgave you, you still let her have that child, but lied to me saying the baby had been aborted."
Everyone was stunned. Connor pressed his lips together and was about to explain, but Maya didn't give him the chance.
"You only said our daughter was in a car accident, but you don't dare tell them that our daughter was in your care when you handed her over to your mistress and she got hurt, do you?
I also just found out that the person who pushed our daughter into the road to get hit by a car was your illegitimate daughter.
You only said our daughter died in a car accident, but you don't dare tell them that our daughter didn't actually die in that accident—she was just in a coma for two months.
When there was a real possibility that she could wake up, you signed the papers to stop treatment and transplanted her heart into your bastard child."
Maya's words fell like thunderbolts one after another, shocking everyone present beyond belief.
"Maya, I was wrong, I really was wrong..."
"You don't know you were wrong at all. If you really knew what you did wrong, you wouldn't only mention things that make you look good.
You're always this selfish. You don't dare tell others what you really did wrong—you just say you love me, but you don't dare let them know that you had the household staff beat me with nearly a hundred lashes. My back is still covered in scars that won't go away.
You didn't take me to the hospital for treatment and locked me in the basement instead, letting me develop a high fever from infected wounds. You forced me to apologize to your mistress, and if I hadn't apologized, I probably would have died just like my daughter."
