"Wake up, you worthless girl!"
A sharp female voice pierced Quinn's ears. She jerked awake to find herself staring into a familiar, contorted face.
Her foster mother.
How was she here?!
Quinn's entire body trembled as she instinctively shrank back, her spine hitting the cold bars behind her.
"What, surprised to see us?" Her foster father grinned, showing yellowed teeth, his gaze roaming over her body. "You've grown up nicely—much prettier than when you were little."
Quinn's stomach churned as childhood nightmares came flooding back.
Her foster father's drunken hands finding their way into her room.
Her foster mother's cold, abusive tirades.
Countless times being locked in the woodshed until she fainted from hunger.
And all of it—was just another component of their experiment.
Was this current situation also part of it?
"How... how did you find me here?" she asked, her voice shaking, fingers clutching her clothes.
"Someone gave us the address, of course." Her foster mother sneered with a hostile tone. "All these years you've been sending us monthly payments to keep us away, then suddenly nothing for two months. We had to come collect what we're owed."
Quinn froze: "Payments?"
"Don't play dumb!" Her foster father yanked her hair violently. "We agreed on a hundred thousand a month. You think we're beggars? How dare you cut us off?"
"What money? I don't know..." Tears instantly sprang to her eyes from the pain. "I really don't know what you're talking about..."
Apparently hearing the commotion outside, the mansion's main gate suddenly opened. Richard emerged with Madelyn on his arm, followed by Mr. and Mrs. Morrison.
"What's all this noise about so early in the morning?" Mrs. Morrison frowned, her gaze sweeping over Quinn with revulsion.
Quinn's foster parents' eyes lit up. They immediately released her and rushed over: "You must be this girl's biological parents! We've spent years raising your daughter—surely we deserve compensation for our trouble?"
Mr. Morrison's expression soured: "What compensation?"
"A hundred thousand a month, not a penny less!" Her foster mother stood with hands on hips, eyes gleaming with greed. "That's what she's been paying us before. Now that it's stopped, we won't stand for it! If you don't pay, we're taking her back to marry her off!"
Madelyn gasped, covering her mouth in shock: "My goodness, even working three jobs a day, my sister couldn't earn that much... She couldn't possibly be... being kept by someone, could she?"
"I'm not!" Quinn struggled to her feet. "I don't even know what money they're talking about..."
"Silence!" Mrs. Morrison snapped harshly, disappointment evident in her eyes. "The Morrison family doesn't have a daughter with no sense of shame!"
Richard pulled Madelyn back in disgust: "Stay away from her. Who knows what diseases she's carrying."
Seeing they wouldn't get money from these people, the foster parents quickly changed tactics. Her foster father grabbed Quinn's arm: "Since you have no money, you're coming back with us! The old cripple from the neighboring village has offered $300,000 as a bride price and is waiting to marry you!"
Quinn felt like she'd been plunged into ice water. She shook her head frantically, looking pleadingly at the Morrisons: "No... I won't go back. I was just about to... Please, please help me..."
Mr. Morrison coldly turned away.
Mrs. Morrison simply went back inside.
Richard merely waved for the security guards to come and escort all three of them off the property, slamming the mansion gates behind them with a resounding bang.
Through the iron bars, Quinn saw Madelyn flash her a triumphant smile.
"Behave yourself!" Her foster mother slapped her face, dragging her toward a dilapidated van parked on the roadside.
Quinn's lip bled, her ears ringing. She could hear her foster father on the phone: "Yes, we've got her... We'll deliver her tonight... Yes, yes, she's still a virgin, don't worry..."
Terror suddenly washed over her like a tidal wave.
The van drove deeper into remote areas. When they entered a rough mountain road, her foster parents grew distracted, counting the jewelry they'd managed to pilfer from the Morrison house.
Quinn quietly reached for the door handle.
"What are you doing, you little bitch?!" Her foster mother suddenly noticed her movement and lunged to grab her.
Quinn used all her strength to fling open the door, leaping out as her foster father slammed on the brakes!
She crashed hard onto the gravel road, instantly shredding the skin on her arms and knees, but survival instinct overrode the pain. She scrambled to her feet and staggered into the forest.
"You ungrateful bitch! Stop right there!" Her foster father's furious shouts followed her.
Quinn didn't dare look back, desperately running deeper into the woods.
She ran until her legs could no longer support her, finally collapsing into a small stream.
The sounds of pursuit had faded, but she forced herself up again, crawling into nearby tall grass, allowing the meter-high vegetation to swallow her completely.
No one would save her. She had to summon every ounce of strength to save herself.
