Madelyn stood at the corner of the staircase, taking in everything happening below. Her usually sweet smile gradually froze on her face as uneasiness spread through her heart.
"Richard, Mom, Dad, what are you talking about?" She forced a smile and hurried down the stairs, her voice still soft and sweet. "Did my sister make you angry again?"
However, she was met with three cold gazes.
"Madelyn," Mr. Morrison spoke first, his tone unprecedentedly cold, "go to your room."
Madelyn faltered, panic flashing in her eyes: "Dad, what's wrong? Did my sister..."
"Shut up!" Richard suddenly cut her off harshly, his eyes sharp as knives. "Don't mention her in front of me."
Madelyn trembled at the unexpected rebuke, her eyes instantly reddening: "Richard, how can you yell at me? I haven't done anything wrong..."
"Nothing wrong?" Mrs. Morrison laughed coldly, her gaze devoid of its usual indulgence. "You deliberately stepped on her hand, constantly put her down, even placed cockroaches on her bed—did you really think we didn't know about these things?"
Madelyn's face turned deathly pale, her lips quivering: "I-I didn't... you misunderstood! My sister is slandering me!"
"Misunderstood?" Richard's once loving eyes were now filled with menace as he approached her step by step. "The house has surveillance cameras that captured everything clearly. Should I play the footage for you now?"
Madelyn backed away in panic, tears streaming down her face: "It's not like that... I just... I was just afraid of losing you all! After she came back, all your attention was on her. I... I just wanted you to notice me more..."
"So you repeatedly framed her?" Mrs. Morrison's voice was ice-cold. "We raised you all these years just to teach you these despicable tactics?"
Madelyn completely lost her composure, rushing forward to grab Mrs. Morrison's hand: "Mom, I was wrong! I truly know I was wrong! Don't treat me like this... I only have you all!"
Mrs. Morrison violently shook off her hand, frowning with disgust: "Don't call me Mom. You've disappointed me too much. From today on, you are no longer a daughter of the Morrison family."
These words struck Madelyn like lightning. She staggered back several steps, shaking her head in disbelief: "No... that's impossible! You can't do this to me! I'm your daughter!"
"Daughter?" Mr. Morrison sneered. "You were merely part of the experiment. Now that it's over, if you had passed the test normally, we might have kept you by our side. But everything you've done has disappointed us deeply, so it's time for you to return to your biological parents."
"Experiment? What experiment?" Madelyn was completely bewildered, tears blurring her vision. "What are you talking about... I've been your daughter since I was little!"
Richard impatiently waved his hand: "Come, pack her things and send her away."
Two security guards immediately stepped forward, holding Madelyn by her arms.
"No! I won't go!" Madelyn struggled frantically, her voice rising to a shriek. "Richard! Dad! Mom! Please don't send me away! I'll be good from now on, I'll never make you angry again!"
However, the three merely watched her coldly, as if looking at a stranger.
Madelyn finally broke down. She fell to her knees, crawling to Mrs. Morrison's feet, sobbing uncontrollably: "Mom... please... don't abandon me... why, why are you doing this? Weren't you the one who loved me most..."
Mrs. Morrison looked down at her with contempt: "Your biological parents have been contacted. They'll come for you."
"No! I don't want them!" Madelyn screamed hysterically. "They're just poor people! I don't want to go back to that kind of life! I am the Morrison heiress! I am!"
Richard scoffed: "The Morrison heiress? You think you're worthy?"
This statement completely shattered Madelyn's last hope. She collapsed on the floor, her eyes vacant: "Why... why is this happening... yesterday you were all so kind to me... why has everything changed today..."
No one answered her.
The security guards roughly dragged her out the door, her cries gradually fading away into the night.
Mr. Morrison exhaled deeply, rubbing his temples: "Finally, some peace and quiet."
Mrs. Morrison looked at Richard, her tone carrying a hint of reproach: "What now? Quinn is gone, Madelyn has been sent away. Our experiment..."
"The experiment was successful," Richard interrupted, his eyes inscrutable. "We just underestimated Quinn."
"So now..."
"Keep searching," Richard turned toward the study, his voice cold. "No matter what, we must bring her back."
