Sunlight.
Scorching, blinding, overwhelming sunlight.
Quinn stood outside the airport, suddenly unable to open her eyes against the unfiltered brightness. She instinctively raised her hand to shield herself, only to discover her fingers were trembling.
This was a completely new place, where no one would look at her with malice, where no one would torment her under the guise of an experiment.
Her heart contracted sharply, a hot wave surging from her chest to her throat. She opened her mouth but couldn't make a sound.
All her experiences over the years suddenly flooded her mind. The humiliation and shame, mixed with the surreal feeling of escaping the experiment, overwhelmed her in that moment.
In the next second, tears broke free.
"Miss? Do you need help?"
Quinn looked up hurriedly to see a blonde woman with a luggage cart watching her with concern. She quickly wiped her face, her knuckles scraping painfully against her cheeks.
"N-no, I'm fine..."
The woman pulled tissues from her bag: "You don't look well. Has something happened?"
Quinn stared at the tissue with its sunflower print, suddenly realizing that in all her years of suffering, no one had ever offered her a tissue to wipe her tears. This was the first time.
"I'm fine, thank you." She took the tissue, but when her fingertips touched the woman's warm palm, her tears flowed even more heavily.
"It's okay. Whatever happened before will pass," the woman smiled. "You look young. You must still be a student."
Quinn clutched the tissue and dried her tears. Just as she was about to answer, she suddenly realized her suitcase was missing.
She turned around in panic to see a little girl struggling to drag her suitcase toward her.
"Miss, how can someone your age be so careless?" The little girl looked up, hands on hips like a miniature adult. "Good thing I saw it, or you would have left it behind. Don't do that again!"
"You naughty girl!" The woman quickly apologized, "I'm sorry, Miss. This is my daughter, she always so impulsive, she means no harm..."
"It's fine." Quinn knelt down and rummaged through her bag, eventually pulling out a box of candy. "Thank you. These are candies from my country. Many people love them. They're for you."
After waving goodbye to the pair, Quinn boarded the airport shuttle. The driver glanced at her through the rearview mirror: "Which district are you staying in?"
"I..." She suddenly realized she hadn't booked a hotel, and school registration wasn't until tomorrow.
"First time here? If you like the ocean..." The driver laughed heartily. "I recommend the beachside guesthouse. The owner makes the best scones in town."
"Thank you. I'll go there then."
The guesthouse owner was a middle-aged woman wearing an apron. Her first words upon seeing Quinn were: "My goodness, child, what have you been through? How did you get so thin? It breaks my heart."
Quinn instinctively touched her face, bitterness spreading through her heart.
"The bathroom is on the left, with hot water available 24 hours," the owner ushered her inside. "Your room is already cleaned. I'll send some food over later. You need to rest now, dear."
