In the bathroom, as hot water cascaded over her body, Quinn discovered that the ugly scar on her shoulder hadn't split open despite her long journey.
Though it was jagged, it was healing.
When she lay down, the bed felt impossibly soft, giving her an unexpected sense of security.
Quinn curled up under the blanket as the faint sound of ocean waves drifted through the window, like a gentle reassurance.
Half-asleep, she heard her phone vibrate.
It was a confirmation email from the university.
[Scholarship funds have been disbursed. Dear Quinn, welcome to our university.]
In the darkness, Quinn buried her face in her pillow.
This time, no one would force her to sleep in a stables, no one would push her down the stairs, and no one would... tie her to a target and let arrows pierce her shoulder.
A damp patch spread across her pillow, but this time it wasn't from pain.
Sunlight filtered through the curtains as Quinn opened her eyes, momentarily disoriented before realizing she was in a foreign country.
Outside, seagulls called and waves crashed against the distant shore.
She took a deep breath and got out of bed.
Today was registration day at the university.
The owner had already prepared breakfast.
Warm scones with jam and a glass of lukewarm milk.
"Eat up, child," she smiled. "You're too thin. You need to build your strength."
Quinn bit into a scone, the sweet flavor spreading across her tongue. She suddenly felt a lump in her throat.
So... there really were people in the world who cared whether she had enough to eat.
"Thank you," she said softly.
The owner waved dismissively. "Don't mention it. Come back when you can, and I'll make you something even better."
The university was even more beautiful than she had imagined.
Quinn stood at the entrance, gazing up at the towering Gothic architecture. Sunlight bathed the red-brick walls, making them look warm and dignified.
She clutched her backpack strap, took a deep breath, and stepped inside.
"Fresh here?" a gentle male voice came from beside her.
Quinn turned to see a tall young man standing nearby, holding a stack of documents.
He wore black-framed glasses, had refined features, and a slight smile played at the corners of his lips.
"Yes," she nodded, feeling a bit awkward.
"I'm Nox Lewis, in charge of welcoming new students," he said, approaching with a gentle voice. "Which department are you in? I'll take you to registration."
"Economics."
"What a coincidence, me too." Nox smiled, reaching for her luggage. "Let's go. I'll help you with the paperwork."
Quinn instinctively wanted to refuse, but he had already taken her suitcase naturally, so she could only follow.
Along the way, Nox patiently introduced the university layout—where the library was, where the cafeteria was, and even which café had the best desserts.
"Are you a graduate student?" he asked.
"Yes."
"Coming here alone must be challenging," Nox glanced at her, his eyes gentle. "If you need any help in the future, feel free to ask me anytime."
Quinn was momentarily stunned.
Such words... she had never heard before.
