Late at night, Richard stood alone on the balcony of the Morrison estate, a half-smoked cigarette between his fingers. The moonlight fell coldly on his sharp profile, revealing eyes dark with brooding intensity.
He slowly exhaled a cloud of smoke, and in the swirling haze, he seemed to see Quinn as a child again.
That little girl who always followed behind him, softly calling him "Brother Richard."
Back then, she was the one he had decided to marry.
He remembered when she got lost at age six, how he searched frantically for three whole days in the rainy night, eventually being forcibly brought home with a high fever.
He had curled up in bed, crying heart-rendingly until his father told him:
"This is just an experiment. If she passes the tests, she'll be worthy of becoming the Morrison heir and your wife."
Those words were like medicine, instantly stopping his tears.
Yes, his Quinn needed to be strong enough to stand by his side. The neglect, the abuse—it was all to temper her.
"Bang!"
Richard slammed his fist against the railing, his knuckles instantly streaked with blood.
She had passed the tests. Why did she run?
Though her departure showed some ingratitude, the experiment was over. He wouldn't hold this final act against her. As long as... as long as she came back to him, he could forgive and forget.
"Richard..."
A tearful voice suddenly came from behind.
Richard turned sharply to see Madelyn standing in the moonlight, wearing a thin nightgown, her eyes red from crying.
"Who let you in?" he frowned, disgust evident in his eyes.
Madelyn shrank back but still gathered the courage to approach: "I-I couldn't stand it anymore... that house is so small and broken, and those people do nothing but drink all day..."
She suddenly lunged forward, grabbing his sleeve: "Richard, please let me come back! I promise I'll be good. I'll do whatever you want..."
Richard looked down at her, his gaze gradually turning dangerous.
It was this woman who had repeatedly framed Quinn. If not for her, Quinn would have suffered less torment and might already be his wife in name.
"Get out."
Madelyn trembled, incredulous: "What did you say?"
"I said get out." Richard grabbed her chin, his grip so strong it nearly crushed her bones. "If you hadn't interfered, why would Quinn have left?"
"It wasn't me!" Madelyn cried in pain, tears streaming down her face. "She's the ungrateful one! We were all so good to her, yet she..."
"It hurts! Richard, please let go..."
Richard violently threw her to the ground, looking down at her: "Good? Since you think we were so good to her, perhaps you'd like to experience some of that 'goodness' yourself?"
Madelyn looked up at him in terror. Where was the elegant young gentleman she knew? The madness swirling in his eyes made her instinctively want to flee.
"Richard, calm down..." she trembled, crawling backward. "I-I'll leave right now..."
"Too late."
Richard methodically crouched down, his long fingers gently caressing her cheek, the gesture so tender it was chilling.
"Do you know? I've always known Quinn would be my wife. When she went missing at six, I nearly turned the entire city upside down... until later I was told it was all a test for her..."
Madelyn suddenly realized something, her eyes widening in horror: "A test? So all that... all that abuse was..."
"All for her own good," Richard's lips curved into a smile, but his eyes remained cold. "She needed to be strong enough to be worthy of becoming my wife, worthy of being the Morrison heir."
"You're insane..." Madelyn shook uncontrollably. "But what does this have to do with me? Why drag me into this?"
"Why?" The coldness in his eyes was replaced by mockery. "You were also part of the experiment, of course. Besides wanting to see her reactions, we also wanted to know what would become of a mongrel with commoner blood if raised from childhood in our social class."
Madelyn's eyes widened in horror.
"Unfortunately, as we expected, common blood proves inferior," he stood up, resuming his elegant, dignified demeanor as if the previous madness had never existed. "Since you're so eager to experience that 'goodness,' you can stay."
Madelyn turned to flee but was surrounded by security guards.
"No, it's not like that... I was wrong, I truly was wrong. I beg you, please let me go!"
