Despite being surrounded by kindness, Quinn's nightmares became increasingly frequent.
She would often wake in the middle of the night, her nightclothes soaked with cold sweat, fingers clutching the sheets desperately, as if at any moment someone might burst in and drag her to the disinfection pool.
Sometimes walking across campus, she would suddenly stop and look around vigilantly, afraid that surveillance cameras might be hidden in some corner.
Everything around her seemed unreal.
Had she truly escaped?
Or was she still trapped in the experiment?
"Quinn?"
Nox's voice pulled her back to reality. She realized she had zoned out again, the coffee in her hand long since gone cold.
"Sorry, I..."
"You look unwell," Nox gently took the cup from her hands, his warm fingertips inadvertently brushing against her hand. "Do you want to go to the campus clinic?"
Quinn instinctively withdrew her hand, forcing a smile: "It's nothing. I just didn't sleep well."
Nox watched her quietly for a moment before speaking: "I know an excellent therapist, just near the university."
She looked up sharply, meeting his gentle but determined gaze.
In that moment, she suddenly realized—
He had known all along.
As if guided by some unseen force, she nodded.
The consultation room smelled faintly of antiseptic.
"Post-traumatic stress disorder," the therapist closed her notebook, her voice gentle. "Miss Quinn, you now have your own life. Those experiences are in the past, and none of it was your fault."
Quinn gripped the hem of her skirt tightly, afraid to look up and see pity in the therapist's eyes.
Suddenly, a warm hand covered hers.
"It's okay. We'll take it slowly," Nox's voice came from beside her. "I'll be with you."
At that moment, Quinn's tears finally broke free.
By the time the campus was covered in snow and ice, Quinn could finally sleep peacefully, with nightmares becoming less frequent.
Nox would "accidentally" run into her every day, sometimes bringing a cup of hot chocolate, sometimes an interesting book.
"There's a meteor shower observation at the library tonight," he said, gently wrapping a cashmere scarf around her neck. "Want to go together?"
The scarf carried a faint cedar scent. Quinn buried half her face in it and nodded.
At the observatory, they stood side by side gazing at the stars. When the first meteor streaked across the night sky, Nox turned his deep gaze on her, full of tenderness: "Quinn, I..."
"Quinn!"
An angry voice shattered the quiet.
Quinn froze, slowly turning around.
Richard stood at the top of the stairs, impeccably dressed in a suit but with madness in his eyes. His gaze locked onto where Nox's shoulder touched hers.
"I've finally found you," Richard strode forward, his voice barely containing his excitement. "Come home with me."
Quinn instinctively stepped back, bumping into Nox. This movement completely enraged Richard, who lunged forward to grab her but was blocked by Nox.
"Sir, please calm down."
"Get out of my way!" Richard's eyes blazed as he swung a fist at Nox. "She's my fiancée!"
Nox sidestepped the blow, keeping Quinn behind him: "Clearly, she doesn't want to go with you."
Richard looked past him directly at Quinn: "Quinn, the experiment is over now. You've proven yourself excellent. We can..."
"Experiment? You dare mention the experiment?" Quinn suddenly laughed, a laugh filled with biting coldness.
"Richard, do you know what I dream about every night? The pain of high-pressure water hitting my wounds, the blood when arrows pierced my shoulder, the cold eyes of all of you!"
Richard's face paled slightly: "I was young then. I couldn't make decisions! Besides, it was all for your own good. Look how excellent you've become!"
"For my good?" Quinn's chest heaved violently as she raised her hand and slapped him hard. "Then why weren't you the test subject?"
The sound echoed sharply as his pale face instantly reddened and swelled. His angry eyes trembled when they met her hateful gaze.
"Quinn, I truly love you," his voice shook. "I always have... we were meant to be together. All of this was for our future..."
"Love?" Quinn shook her head, her eyes reddening. "You don't understand what love is."
She turned and took Nox's hand: "Let's go."
Richard tried to follow, but Nox coldly blocked him: "Miss Quinn has made herself clear. If you continue to harass her, I will call the police."
Snowflakes fell gently around them.
Quinn walked away without looking back.
She held Nox's warm hand tightly as they walked toward the brightly lit library.
