In the following two days, the expected harassment didn't materialize. It was as if Richard's appearance had been nothing more than a nightmare.
Quinn was carrying a stack of books out of the library, still feeling vaguely uneasy.
"Quinn!" The next moment, a familiar voice made her freeze.
Mr. and Mrs. Morrison stood nearby, elegantly dressed but haggard. Mrs. Morrison's eyes were red, and she stumbled slightly when she saw Quinn.
"We've finally found you..." Mrs. Morrison's voice choked, no longer bearing her previous arrogance. "Won't you come home with your mother and father?"
Quinn instinctively stepped back, took a deep breath, and turned to leave.
"Quinn!" Mr. Morrison frowned, quickly moving to block her path. "We know we were wrong. Your tantrum should have limits—after all, you passed our test. Everything in the Morrison family will be yours now! The inheritance rights, stocks, properties..."
"I don't need them," Quinn coldly interrupted. "Save those things for your next test subject."
Mrs. Morrison, with tear-filled eyes, couldn't help feeling irritated at Quinn's attitude: "How can you talk like this? We're your birth parents! Those years... those years were painful for us too, but it was all for your benefit. You used to be so understanding, how could you..."
"For my benefit?" Quinn suddenly looked up, harshly cutting off her words as tears that had been held back for so long finally fell. "Do you know what my life was like after I was abducted at six?"
"My foster father would kick me when he was drunk. My foster mother burned my back with cigarette butts. At school, classmates called me a bastard with no parents. Teachers made me stand as punishment all day because I couldn't afford tutoring fees... Ha! You know all this because these were the choices you made for me! You always knew what kind of life I was living, yet you still believed it was for my own good!"
Mrs. Morrison's face turned ashen as she reached out to grab Quinn: "That's not true. We just wanted to make you strong... and you did well, didn't you?"
"Get away from me."
Quinn violently pushed them both away, staggering backward several steps.
Mrs. Morrison tried to say more, but a tall figure suddenly stood in front of Quinn.
"You two should leave now. Quinn doesn't want to see you. I've already notified security, and if you continue to harass us, I won't hesitate to call the police as well."
Hearing this, the pair had no choice but to depart resentfully.
On a bench by the campus lake, Quinn curled up like an injured animal. Nox silently offered her a cup of hot chocolate, its warmth transferring through the cup to her cold fingertips: "It's all over now. I'm here for you from now on."
Quinn stared somewhat blankly at the ripples on the lake's surface before suddenly speaking: "You know what's most ridiculous? They designed this experiment just to create a perfect heir, as if I wasn't their daughter but an object they could play with at will."
Nox gently wiped away her tears: "You're not anyone's experiment or material. You are you—the one and only Quinn."
His fingers were warm and dry, carrying a reassuring strength. Quinn suddenly felt an impulse to show him all her scars.
"At six years old, what I thought was getting lost was actually their careful scheme..."
She spoke haltingly about everything—from the abuse by her foster parents to school bullying, from having wages withheld at work to being repeatedly framed by Madelyn. By the end, her voice was choked with emotion.
Nox listened quietly throughout. When she finished, he gently embraced her: "It's all over now. Don't worry, they probably won't have time to bother you again."
Quinn looked up at him from within his embrace, seeing the tenderness and concern filling his eyes: "Nox, I..."
"I've wanted to tell you for some time that I like you," Nox suddenly said, the tips of his ears turning slightly red. "Not out of sympathy or pity, but simply because I like you, Quinn."
Cherry blossoms swirled in the wind between them. Looking at this man who had given her endless warmth, Quinn found herself nodding.
"Me too."
