Quinn didn't stay away for long. After learning that her tormentors had returned to the country, she went back to school. She had too many studies to focus on and no time to continue playing their experimental games.
The weather grew increasingly cold. She hugged a stack of materials as she left the Economics building, her breath condensing in the frosty air.
Nox waited for her at the bottom of the steps. When he saw her approaching, he took the materials from her hands and gave her a warm coffee. "Someone's looking for you."
Quinn followed his gaze to see Richard standing beneath a ginkgo tree. His expensive suit hung wrinkled on his frame, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. His disheveled appearance made him look as though he had aged a decade overnight.
"Quinn." He rushed forward. "Please help me! James Group is finished. My parents might go to prison! Only you can help me now... Lewis Group is your boyfriend's family business. If you just say something, he would surely..."
Quinn slowly but firmly withdrew her hand, looking at his bloodshot eyes without a trace of sympathy. "Richard, I also begged you more than once back then."
Richard's face instantly turned ashen.
"When I was tied to that target, I thought how much better it would be if the arrow missed and pierced my heart instead. Then everything would be over."
"No, it wasn't like that..." Richard's voice trembled, but he still tried to justify himself. "Those were just experiments, all meant to make you more excellent."
"Excellent?" Quinn laughed coldly. "If I had received the same education as you from the beginning, I would be even more excellent than I am now!"
Richard staggered back as if stabbed in the chest. He stared desperately into Quinn's eyes, his voice nearly pleading: "Did you... ever love me? Even for a moment?"
Quinn looked at him steadily, her eyes completely unmoved: "Looking at you only makes me sick."
Those words fell like a final judgment. Richard's spine seemed to collapse. Nox stepped forward at the right moment, grabbed him by the collar, and delivered a furious punch.
"If you continue to harass her, I promise things will get even worse for you."
Three months later, in the slums.
Richard crouched beside a garbage bin, stuffing empty plastic bottles into a woven bag. His fingers were covered in chilblains, and dirt was embedded under the nails he once meticulously maintained.
A month ago, all their assets had been seized, his parents imprisoned, and he had been driven to the slums, burdened with enormous debt.
"Well, if it isn't the young master James?" A group of thugs surrounded him, and their leader kicked over his bag. "Collecting garbage?"
Richard silently began picking up the bottles again, but a foot pressed down on his hand. The excruciating pain made cold sweat break out on his forehead, but he just gritted his teeth without making a sound.
"You owe quite a lot, don't you?" The thug squatted down and patted his face. "Want us to introduce you to a job? With that face of yours, rich older women would love you."
Laughter erupted around them. Richard's face paled slightly, but he continued collecting the scattered bottles, as if he hadn't heard their vulgar taunts.
"Acting high and mighty, are we?" The thug's demeanor suddenly changed as he kicked Richard in the stomach. "Still think you're the James heir?"
Richard curled up on the ground, his stomach churning with pain, yet he made no move to fight back.
A downpour suddenly began. Finding their entertainment ruined, the thugs left with a stream of curses. Richard struggled to his feet and limped toward the recycling station, dragging his bag of collected items.
In the distance, an LED screen on a high-rise building was broadcasting news about Lewis Group partnering with a university to establish a psychological trauma research center. The camera panned across the guest seats, showing Quinn in a white dress, smiling serenely as she held Nox's arm.
Richard stood in the rain watching for a long time, until the screen went dark.
The star he had once deliberately destroyed now shone brightly in someone else's sky.
