The divorce papers lay forgotten on the nightstand.
Riley stared at the ceiling, remembering their wedding night. How Blake had pulled her into his study while her heart was still soaring with hope.
How he'd casually slid divorce papers across the desk, his signature already scrawled at the bottom.
And how excited he had been, but the words that came out of his mouth broke her heart like a knife.
"Dude, you're like my best friend. It'd be weird as hell if I actually slept with my best friend, right?"
"I'm signing this now so when I finally get my family off my back, we can just make it official and go back to normal."
Since then, they'd been sleeping together countless times. Blake had wrestled control of Harrison Industries away from his father, become everything he'd always planned to be.
But he'd never brought up that divorce again.
Riley had been stupid enough to think it meant something. That maybe all those nights together had changed how he saw her.
The truth was so much simpler: Blake had just gotten comfortable.
She was convenient for him.
Whether she stayed or disappeared tomorrow—it wouldn't change his life at all.
Tears had dried on her cheeks when exhaustion finally dragged her under.
Light suddenly blazed overhead. Blake yanked the covers away, shaking her awake roughly.
"Sophia spent hours cooking dinner to apologize to you, and you just storm off like some dramatic brat? What the hell is wrong with you?"
He dragged her out of bed, his grip rough on her arm.
Riley's legs gave out. Her knee slammed into the dresser corner, pain shooting through her, but Blake didn't even look back.
He hauled her to the dining room where Sophia sat hunched over her plate like a kicked puppy.
"Ms.Lawson, I'm so, so sorry! I just grabbed the wrong flash drive, I swear! I didn't know it was Blake's personal one. I feel horrible about this..."
Riley's voice came out hollow. "You really just grabbed the wrong one?"
Blake's files were locked behind passwords even she didn't know.
But somehow Sophia had figured them out.
This whole innocent act was garbage. If Sophia really felt bad, she wouldn't have run straight to Blake for the rest of the day off, leaving everyone else to clean up her mess.
Sophia's eyes welled up even more at Riley's words, turning to Blake with pure wounded innocence filling her gaze.
"Look, she already apologized. You don't need to keep twisting the knife." Blake's voice had an edge as he guided Sophia to sit next to him, "Besides, sweetheart, Riley's not a supervisor anymore, you don't need to be so polite to her."
Sophia's face went pink as she lowered her head.
"But Ms.Lawson's been doing that job for so long, and everyone really looks up to her..."
"So what?" He shrugged, then fixed his cold stare on Riley. "You got a problem with that, Riley?"
Riley watched the way his whole face softened when he looked at Sophia.
Her chest felt hollow, but she managed to keep her voice steady.
"Nope."
She was done. With Blake, with Harrison Industries, with all of it. She decided to leave.
Seeing her reaction, Sophia beamed and started pushing dishes toward her.
Riley glanced down. Every single dish was loaded with chili peppers. Her stomach was already raw from stress—this would put her in the hospital.
"You just go ahead. I'm not hungry."
She turned to leave, but Blake slammed his chopsticks down.
"What is your problem tonight?"
"Sit your ass down and eat, or you and your whole team can pack your shit and get out!"
