                    "PA!"
The slap stunned Sophia speechless.
Riley's eyes blazed red as she spun toward the stairs to find her watch.
But Sophia grabbed her arm.
They struggled, and Riley's nails scraped across Sophia's cheek. Sophia was about to hit back when—
The door exploded open.
Blake stormed in, his face black with rage, and shoved Riley so hard she flew backward.
Her head cracked against the metal locker with a sickening thud.
Marcus, who'd followed Blake in, immediately rushed to Riley's side.
"Blake, I found this watch in my pocket and Riley just went psycho on me for no reason! I accidentally dropped it trying to get away from her—I swear I didn't mean to!"
Sophia sobbed hysterically.
Blake wrapped his arms around her, stroking her back.
He was about to tear into Riley when Marcus gasped.
"Jesus, Riley, your head is bleeding!"
Riley swayed on her feet, blood trickling down her forehead from where she'd hit the locker.
Blake's frown deepened and he started to get up, but Sophia clung to him desperately.
"Blake, I'm so stupid for falling for you."
Her swollen eyes looked like a wounded animal's.
"I won't get between you and Riley anymore. I'll quit, I'll leave town, I'll—"
Before she could finish, Blake grabbed the back of her neck and crushed his mouth to hers.
His lips pressed against hers desperately. "I won't let you go!"
Tears still streaked down Sophia's cheeks.
She kissed him back fiercely, their mouths moving together with wet, desperate sounds that filled the small room.
Marcus looked away, uncomfortable. "Damn, Blake's really gone for her?"
Riley stared at the scene in front of her.
The bitter taste in her mouth seemed to sink into her chest, eating away at what was left of her heart.
She stumbled to her feet and made her way downstairs to find her watch.
The face was completely shattered, the glass scattered like fallen stars in the snow.
Even breathing hurt.
She had to get out of here.
Riley turned to grab her stuff, but Marcus was already coming over with her gear.
He looked awkward as hell. "Riley, Blake's totally obsessed with that Sophia chick. Maybe keep your distance, you know?"
Riley took her things without expression.
She knew Blake's actual words had been way harsher than Marcus was letting on.
She tried to leave, but they made her stay.
Soon enough, Sophia came out hanging all over Blake, glowing with happiness.
Since Sophia couldn't ski, Blake patiently taught her every little thing, their laughter carrying across the slopes like knives.
During break time, Blake and Marcus went to the lodge to smoke.
Riley went to get water and heard her name being mentioned.
She moved closer to the doorway.
"Dude, you know Riley's been crazy about you forever. Making out with another girl right in front of her? That's fucking brutal, man.
Yeah, you asked her to marry you to get your family off your back. Now that's handled and you don't even like her—just divorce her already. Stop stringing her along."
The door was cracked open just enough for Riley to see Blake smoking inside.
Cigarette in one hand, the other drumming against his thigh.
"Sure, I don't love her. But she's convenient. Takes care of all my shit without me having to think about it."
His words were like a physical blow. Riley felt like someone had reached into her chest and was crushing her heart with their bare hands.
"You don't get it. Riley can't function without me. I give her the Harrison name, let her stand beside me in public—but that's where it ends. She needs to stop expecting more."
How broken do you have to be to cry without any expression on your face? Riley knows.
All this time, she thought her love was a secret. But Blake had known the whole time.
He'd been laughing at her, watching her chase her tail like a trained animal.
Voices drifted from the room again.
"But Blake, after all these years, you really don't feel anything? Riley's different from all those other girls you used to mess around with."
Blake let out a bitter laugh.
"Yeah, she's different. That's why I picked her instead of some random chick to marry. But now? Fuck that. A man should marry someone he actually wants. Riley just... doesn't do it for me."
Riley's clenched fists slowly went slack.
One final tear slipped down her pale cheek.
Blake, nobody dies from being alone.
Not other people. And definitely not me.
She turned and walked away without looking back.
