Blake's phone started ringing again.
Sophia scowled at the name on the screen.
Without hesitation, she declined the call, sent a quick text, then deleted the call log.
Marcus calling could only mean one thing—he wanted to talk about Riley.
She wasn't about to let anyone drag Blake away from her side.
Blake walked in carrying takeout bags.
He'd barely set the food down when he started looking around for his phone.
Sophia helpfully handed it to him.
"Anyone call?" he asked casually.
Sophia's eyes flickered for just a second. "Nope. Why? Did I make you miss something important again?"
Her eyes immediately started welling up with tears.
Blake couldn't stand seeing her cry.
He rushed to comfort her. "No, no. Marcus said he'd call me back about something. Just wondering why he hasn't yet."
He reached for his phone, but Sophia suddenly cried out in pain.
Blake frowned and shoved his phone back in his pocket.
Tears rolled down Sophia's cheeks as Blake fussed over her like always.
Once she stopped crying, he opened the takeout containers to feed her.
Sophia looked at the same boring food and felt something uncomfortable twist in her chest.
Last time she was in the hospital, Blake had just ordered a bunch of delivery food.
She hadn't expected some rich boy to actually cook for her anyway.
But the second he heard Riley was hospitalized with stomach problems, he'd abandoned Sophia's bedside to rush home and make fresh soup.
The jealousy had eaten her alive—which is why she'd staged that whole crying scene before he got back.
Now Blake was sitting right there, but his mind was clearly somewhere else.
Her voice came out small and wounded.
"Blake, I fell so far down that slope... Does Riley really hate me that much? She must want me dead—"
"Cut it out."
Blake's tone was impatient.
He pressed his fingers to his temples. "Look, Riley's got a temper, but that was probably just an accident. You two need to stay the hell away from each other."
Blake pushed the food aside.
He'd been way too quick to jump down Riley's throat without even asking what happened.
Now that he thought about it, grabbing for someone when you're falling—that's just instinct.
She probably didn't mean to drag Sophia down too.
Watching him automatically defend Riley made acid burn in Sophia's throat.
But she kept her face perfectly composed.
She slid her soft hands inside Blake's shirt, wrapping herself around him like a snake.
Blake's eyes immediately went dark with desire. "Your injuries?"
"I'm fine, Blake. It's been so long since we—"
Before she could finish, Blake crushed his mouth to hers.
They lost themselves in each other, forgetting time and place completely.
Until the next morning.
Sophia's fingers traced along his jawline gently.
Blake, still drowsy and exhausted, automatically caught her hand in his.
His voice was thick with sleep. "Riley, stop..."
Sophia went rigid. Her fingers turned ice cold.
Blake's eyes snapped open, suddenly wide awake.
Sophia's face went pale, but she didn't make a scene like she wanted to.
She slowly pulled her hand away.
"Are you thinking about Riley? I guess I just can't compete with your history together. Maybe you should go check on her instead."
Blake stared at the ceiling, not rushing to comfort her like usual.
He moved her other arm off his waist.
Seeing the stunned look on Sophia's face, he said quietly, "Get some more sleep. I need to go check on her."
Panic shot through Sophia.
She'd just been pushing his buttons—Blake always said no before.
She used to wonder why.
Then she'd overheard Blake talking to his friends.
That's when she learned Blake didn't marry Riley out of love.
If he could marry someone he didn't love, why couldn't that someone be her instead?
