Thor raced like a madman back to the Pack House. He didn’t even bother to grab clothes as he hunted Derrick down.
“Fuck Thor, put on some pants,” the Alpha growled, covering his mate’s eyes with his big hand.
“They took her,” he growled, barely holding on to his fury.
“What?! They came on our lands?” the Alpha asked, standing up swiftly.
“No. She crossed the boundary in the woods. Fuck, it’s my fault. She wanted to go for a ride on my bike, then she said something about our bond being too much and I cut it off. I was stupid and hurt, but then she was flying and I, I couldn’t fucking warn her! I acted like a possessive asshole and now my mate is in the hands of the motherfucker who hurt her in the first place!”
Thor fell to his knees, holding on to his head as pain the likes of which he never felt filled him. The shadow spirits were lurking closer, then, begging him to let them in, promising to give him the vengeance he desired. He wasn’t strong enough to resist them. Thor couldn’t hold on to his grip on this world, his sanity, anything—not without her. Nica was his everything, and he’d ben to weak and proud to take care of her. He let this happen. By pushing too hard. Not talking enough. This was his fault.
“Thor? Thor! Stop! Stop it right now!”
The Alpha command snapped him out of that dark place he’d fallen into. When he focused, he saw not Derrick, but Lucy, and she was kneeling in front of him. His face stung, and from the position of her arm, he realized the tiny Alpha fem must have slapped him. Hard, too.
“Nica needs you right now. I don’t give a crap what the Council said. Those Crows took her against her will. That is kidnapping. Now, are you ready to get your mate back?” she asked.
“Lucy,” Derrick started, but the woman flashed a glare at her mate before turning back to Thor.
“You call the Council or the Lowell brothers or whoever the fuck else you want, Derrick, but Nica is my friend, and I am going with her mate to get her back.”
“Fuck,” the Alpha snarled, then added. “But put on some fucking pants, Thor. I’m not sitting next to you with your dick hanging out, for fuck’s sake.”
“We are gonna get her back,” Lucy reassured him, before standing up.
Thor nodded, too numb to do much else. He ran to his room, grabbed some clothes, and raced outside in jeans and his boots. He could do without the rest. Dark energy swirled around him, and Thor didn’t need to look in the mirrors of his Harley to see his eyes were completely black.
He’d been trying so hard to balance his life, half in and half out of the other world, he never fully realized what that did to those around him. Anger and fury, the rage of restless spirits batted against him, but he had no time for that. Thor had one focus now.
Nica.
He revved his engine, growling in satisfaction as the sounds of his Pack mates bikes echoed his. Together, they hauled ass like bats out of hell, or Wolves on the prowl, he supposed. The Pine Murder thought they could hide behind laws, but the Dire Wolves were a law unto themselves. They had been for eons. No shit stain Crow King was going to change that.
Jack Branwen had fucked with the wrong female. Maybe trusted his men to keep him safe. Or maybe because he hid behind petty rules, he thought they applied to everyone. Fucking scumbag. He had no idea what he was fucking with. Thor didn’t care about the rules or man or beast.
He was a motherfucking Seer. He dealt with things small minds like Branwen’s could not even comprehend. That asshole had riled the wrong monster. Demon Wolf was coming now. And he was angry as fuck.
“Oh my gods, Jack. Do you have any idea what my mate is gonna do to you when he comes for me?” Nica asked.
She laughed aloud at the pitiful man even as blood trickled down from the wound, he’d given her on her head when his Crow hit her in the sky. Dang. Her body ached, and she shivered involuntarily. Nica was bruised and sore, and her left shoulder screamed in pain. Dislocated, she knew. After all, it wasn’t the first time.
“Shut up! I am your mate,” the pathetic man screamed, pulling on his own hair as spittle flew from his mouth.
“No, you’re not. You never were. Hell, Jack, you don’t even know what it means to be a real mate,” she told him, unflinching when he raised his hand and struck her again.
“SHUT UP!” he wailed, but Nica simply wheezed a laugh.
She was naked, cold, tied to the same hated pole he’d shackled her to all those weeks ago. But unlike last time, she didn’t feel alone and scared. She knew better now.
The entire Murder was gathered around, except for poor Ella, whose passing had recently occurred. The same males who guarded the King hovered close, though none looked quite sure about what was happening. Denise was still there, eyes rimmed in red, like she’d been crying for days. Nica’s gaze landed on her, and the woman doubled over, sobbing.
“Get her out of here. Useless bitch,” Jack snarled, stomping over to the fallen woman, and pulling her hair. He shoved her at one of his men, who carried her away.
There were less than two dozen in the Murder now. Small numbers for a group that once boasted a hundred strong. It was his poor leadership that sent them away. Nica knew that, even if Jack still lived under the grand delusion he was a mighty King.
“Where are all your Crows, Jack? Did they leave their weak King?” she taunted.
“Weak? I stole you back, whore. I took you while your mate was stuck on the ground, powerless to stop me! Who is weak now?” he shouted, arms wide in an attempt to appear triumphant.
“Still you, Jack. You’re still the weak one. I can’t imagine Thor would ever have to kidnap a woman or trick her into signing some piece of paper to get her to be with him.”
“Fucking bitch,” he snarled, looking around for something, a weapon likely.
“What’s the matter? Can’t kill me with your hands?”
“You are just begging for it, Domenica. Keep testing me and I will show you exactly how strong I am. Stand her up!” he commanded.
Two Crows came forward, releasing her from the pole and pulling on her manacled hands till she stood before him. She was naked, dirty, and covered in bruised, but Nica did not care. Jack’s eyes raked over her body, sending tendrils of fear and revulsion through her, but she needed to be strong.
She wanted him focused on her. Didn’t care about his screams or the slaps he delivered. All she knew was she didn’t want him to hear what she’d heard until the last minute.
“I’m going to do what I should have done years ago. I’m going to fuck you in front of the Murder. Claim you in the way of our ancestors, get that Wolf’s stink off your skin, whore,” he said, undoing his belt and sliding the leather thing off with a sharp clack.
He wanted a reaction from her. She knew it, but the only thing she could do was smile. Jack’s face turned red as he sneered, till suddenly, he heard it too. The sounds of half a dozen motorcycles closing in on them. Suddenly, the air was filled with electricity, magic. Power crackling and covering the Murder like a hushed cloud.
Then they were there. Finally! She exhaled, slumping forward. Her Pack had come for her. He had come for her. Just like she knew he would. The two Crows who’d been holding her up let go, and she fell unceremoniously to her knees, tears streaming down her face.
“Crows to me!” Jack screamed, but most of the Murder had already run away.
The ones who’d initially remained changed their minds real quick when Thor stepped off his gigantic motorcycle. Oh, her mate looked lethal. He wore his jeans and boots, and nothing else but acres of muscles and tattooed skin. Fury rolled off him in waves, and from Derrick and Lucy and the others who made a circle around them.
“You took one of us, Crow. Stole our Enforcer’s mate,” the Alpha started.
“Big mistake. Huge,” Lucy added.
“Now you will see what losing really means,” Derrick growled, stepping back with his hand on Lucy as Thor walked forward.
He seemed to get bigger with every step he took. The air around him shimmered, and a swirling mass of black smoke slithered up and down around his body. Nica did not think anyone else could see it, but she sure as heck did. It was terrifying in its power, just as he was mesmerizing in all his masculine beauty.
“She’s mine. She was always mi—” Jack didn’t get to finish his thought.
Thor raised his hand, like a certain Sith lord in her favorite movie did. With a flick of his wrist, Jack’s neck was broken, and the threat he posed to Nica was finally over.
“Angel,” Thor growled, coming to her at once.
He ripped her manacles off with his bare hands, lifting her in his arms. The others nodded and clapped, and tears were shed as Lucy approached her and slid a dress over her head. Thor tugged it down the rest of the way, cradling her on his lap as he revved the engine on his bike.
“I’m sorry this is your first ride,” he murmured, eyes still black as he looked down at her. Nica shook her head, wrapping her legs around his waist.
I’m not.
She knew the second he realized she’d spoken inside their telepathic link because his eyes went back to normal, and a wide grin split his face right open. Derrick was barking orders, and she heard something about the Council and the Macconwood Pack being on their way to clean up the mess Jack made.
Hopefully, they would reorganize the Murder, set up new leadership, but Nica was not concerned. That was not her life anymore. Her life was with Thor. With her Pack.
“Fuck, angel. I was so worried,” he growled, holding her tight. “I didn’t think I would get here in time.”
“That’s nutty because I had no doubt. You saved me again, just like I knew you would,” she told him, laughing through tears and holding on for dear life as he pulled out of the trailer park.
“You got that backwards. You’ve been saving me every day since I met you.”
Just like that, Thor’s confession melted Nica into a puddle of goo. She didn’t think it was possible to love him any more than she already did, but every day, he proved her wrong.
“I love you,” she said suddenly, whispering it right into his ear.
Thor revved the engine louder, speeding through the back roads to get back to the Pack House.
I love you, too, he said right into her mind.
Good. Now, take me home, mate.
