Just as Aria was about to speak, Ella realized her words might sound wrong and quickly added, "The salary you gave me is already very generous. I could have rented something better, but I just haven't found a suitable one yet."
Aria said, "The environment here's not bad, but the security's a bit lacking."
Ella nodded. "Yeah."
As they entered the stairwell, Ella said, "Ms. Saxon, I'm home now. You should head back."
Aria Saxon asked, "What floor do you live on?"
"Fifth floor," Ella replied.
"There's no elevator?" Aria asked.
"No," Ella replied.
Aria said, "Let me walk with you. Helps walk off dinner."
Ella didn't refuse this time.
The hallway lights were sound-activated. Ella stomped her foot, and the lights flicked on.
Neither of them was particularly talkative, and they climbed the stairs in silence.
When they reached the fifth floor, a figure swaying from side to side, reeking of alcohol, stumbled ahead of them.
He fumbled with his keys, the clinking metal making an unpleasant sound.
Ella didn't say anything and headed for her own apartment, taking out her keys.
The drunk middle-aged man hadn't yet opened his door, but hearing movement, he turned and grinned at her, "Ella, back already?"
Ella nodded and replied, "Yeah."
The man was her landlord.
When he saw Aria, he grinned widely and asked, "Your friend walked you home?"
"Yeah," Ella replied.
The man hiccupped and said, "Someone in the complex got robbed recently. Remember to check your doors and windows before sleeping. You've been coming home pretty late. Be careful on the road."
Ella nodded, "Thank you. I'll be careful."
The man kept fumbling with his keys, failing to get them in the lock. Just as he was about to bang on the door, it opened from inside, and a hand reached out and grabbed his ear while cursing, "Out drinking again? Why don't you just drink yourself to death?"
His wife yanked him inside. Before closing the door, she smiled at Ella and reminded her to lock up, then shut it.
Ella felt a wave of warmth. When she first rented the place, it was exactly the landlord couple's kindness that made her agree without hesitation.
Remembering that Aria was still there, she turned and politely asked, "Ms. Saxon, would you like to come in for some water?"
"Sure." Aria nodded.
Ella hadn't expected her to agree and quickly opened the door.
While Ella went to boil water, Aria walked over to the balcony and checked the windows. The security bars were old. One good pull might snap them.
When Ella came out with the water, Aria was still standing there. "Ms. Saxon, the water's ready."
Aria turned around, walked over, and said, "Once the semester starts, I'll be at Mandino University a lot. Lily will live on campus. Pearl will be home alone. I'm not comfortable with that. Why don't you move in with us?"
Ella was stunned and instinctively wanted to refuse, but then she remembered what the landlord had said about a break-in and hesitated. "My mom's in the hospital, so whenever I have time, I go visit her. I might not be able to properly take care of Pearl."
Aria said, "I'll raise your salary by another 10 thousand dollars. Once Owen or I get off work, you can go to the hospital. It'll be easier running between two places than three."
Ella replied, "Ms. Saxon, your salary is already very high. No need to raise it again. I'll move in."
Ella's eyes grew damp. She knew Aria made the offer because she heard about the robbery and was worried about her safety.
Aria smiled. "Looks like you don't have much stuff. Why not move tonight? We have a car. If you need boxes or packing materials, we can call a delivery runner."
Ella asked, "Isn't that too rushed? Maybe tomorrow?"
Aria smiled. "Don't worry about the hassle. You're Pearl's teacher."
Ella nodded and turned to her room. "I'll pack now, then."
Aria called Owen to tell him about the move. "Once she's packed, come help if there's too much to carry."
Owen replied, "Got it."
Ella packed everything in just half an hour. After explaining the situation to the landlord couple, she left with Aria.
Very soon, the new semester began.
