Larry opened up and started talking. He began with the experience of organizing the volunteers, and as he spoke more passionately, his voice grew increasingly intense.
"Especially that shameless Hannah! She said Violet was carrying a virus and had already died, and insisted on taking her to the city to be cremated, to prevent infecting others."
Larry added, "Fortunately, Ms. Saxon rushed in time and took the child for emergency treatment. That scene was truly terrifying. A moment later, the child might not have made it."
Mike's heart tightened. "So she was saved in the end, right?"
Larry nodded. "Yeah, she made it..."
Helen listened quietly, occasionally adding a few comments to help Mike better understand the situation.
The more Mike heard, the more shocked he felt.
He hadn't expected that in such a critical moment, someone would deliberately cause trouble. Even going so far as to steal research results.
Most people only saw that this group of students had good luck, securing guaranteed graduate school admissions. Even if they didn't get that, many companies were lining up to hire them. Everyone thought they had gained a lot from this trip and that it had all been worthwhile.
But in reality, from the beginning, they had gone with a selfless heart, even prepared to stay there forever if needed.
The outside world only heard a few vague reports. No one really knew how much Larry and the others had given.
If Mike hadn't asked today, he never would have known what they had actually gone through.
"Wow, you guys are incredible," Mike said with genuine admiration.
Mike had grown up in luxury and doubted he would have been able to endure the same.
Helen emphasized, "Ms. Saxon is also amazing. But it's good that you're following Mr. Schmidt. That way, Ms. Saxon can focus more on us."
Mike inexplicably felt a little dejected.
"Helen's right. Don't worry about it. Ms. Saxon will have more time to teach us."
"Oh right," Larry said, slinging an arm around Mike's shoulder like a good buddy. "Next time you see Mr. Cole, stay away from him! And try not to mention him in front of Ms. Saxon."
Mike wasn't used to being so close to others. But upon hearing this warning, he restrained the urge to push him away and asked, "Why?"
Larry replied, "He's Ms. Saxon's scumbag ex-husband. That Hannah who stirred up trouble and went to jail? She was his mistress."
"He's your ex-husband? And he cheated on you?"
Sophie had only been gossiping when she asked how Aria and Liam knew each other. But once she learned the whole story, she flew into a rage, smashed the flowers Liam had sent on the floor, and ground them underfoot.
She cursed, "Filthy trash."
Aria laughed. "There were no feelings between us, and I didn't lose much."
Sophie continued her rant, "He should've found a hole to crawl into, and he still has the nerve to show up in front of you? Shameless!"
Seeing how angry she was, Aria played along, "Yeah, definitely shameless."
Sophie declared, "Next time he dares come near, I'll curse him out for you."
Aria grinned and said, "Then I'll say thank you in advance."
"Leave it to me." Sophie patted her chest. Beating up scumbags was her specialty.
Seacrest Law Firm.
Owen got off work and happened to run into Mason coming back.
"Mr. Shaw," she called.
Ever since that fraud ring had been busted, Mason had become much more low-key. He tried to avoid Owen whenever possible, and if they did meet, he would take the initiative to greet him.
After all, Owen had played a major role in taking down that group of criminals.
"Hello, Mr. Webb." Owen gave a slight nod and continued walking.
