Mason turned on his heel and followed. "Mr. Shaw, I just got back from Mandino University. Guess who I saw?"
Owen and Mason rarely spoke. Even if they had business, it was usually handled over WhatsApp.
Owen immediately sensed it might be related to Aria.
He stopped and turned. "Did you see Aria?"
"No," Mason replied, with a meaningful smile and a glint of amusement in his eyes. "I saw Liam."
He continued, "He was representing Heffner Hospital and Cole Group, negotiating a project with Mandino University. I'm the legal counsel for this collaboration."
Mason paused strategically, then looked at Owen, who stood calmly waiting for him to go on.
Understanding the cue, Mason continued, "I heard that Liam specifically requested Aria to take on the project, but she refused. That's why they had to assign it to another professor."
Mason warned, "Mr. Shaw, Liam clearly has ulterior motives. You better step up your game."
Owe replied, "Thanks."
After getting in the car, Owen sent a message to Aria. [Madelyn, are you off work yet?]
Aria: [I'll be off a bit later today, around six. You and Pearl, and Ella can eat first.]
Owen: [Let them eat first. I'll wait for you.]
When Aria got home, only Pearl was there.
"Aria, Miss Gilen, and I have already eaten. You go keep Owen company. I'm going to study my Erenolanian vocabulary."
Mandino University was about a 40-minute drive from Mayen Garden. Not too far, but just enough to be late for dinner.
Aria had asked Ella to cook and eat with Pearl first, while she dropped food off at the hospital for her aunt.
Owen arrived after that, and Ella had headed out.
Aria handed a small cake box to Pearl. "Chiffon and yogurt cakes. Not a lot. You can finish them."
Pearl, a huge cake fan, happily accepted it. "Thanks, sis. Go eat with Owen. Miss Gilen will be back by eight. You don't have to keep me company. He's pitiful all by himself."
Aria laughed and tapped her on the forehead. "You sound like you've been bribed by Owen."
Aria said, "Alright, I'll head over now."
Pearl replied, "Alrighty."
When Aria walked into the dining room, Owen had just finished plating the dishes.
He wore a white sleeveless top and gray casual pants. It was an ordinary home outfit, yet it somehow looked different on him. He hadn't dressed like this before.
Owen took off his apron and smiled at her. "How was your first day at work?"
With the apron off, Aria's eyes were involuntarily drawn to him, catching the outline of each muscle beneath his shirt.
Her gaze dropped lower and paused briefly before quickly darting away.
"It was fine," Aria replied.
She hurried into the kitchen to wash her hands, letting cold water dispel the sudden heat rising within her.
Footsteps followed behind. Aria paused. A moment later, a warm body pressed against her back.
Owen gently embraced her, his hands covering hers, his fingertips gliding over hers before slowly tracing circles in her palms.
It seemed like he was helping her wash her hands, but not really. Aria thought he was being strange.
Then, Owen asked, "Liam went to Mandino University?"
Hearing that, Aria immediately understood.
She stifled a laugh, turned off the faucet, tiptoed to grab a few paper towels to dry her hands, and helped him dry his, too.
Owen bent down, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
"He hasn't given up." His voice was steady, but laced with a subtle chill.
Aria turned to face him, looked up, smiling. "Jealous?"
Owen raised a hand and smoothed out the arch of her brow. "If I'm jealous, does that make you happy, Madelyn?"
Aria took his hand and smiled. "I was smiling... because of what you're wearing... Are you trying to seduce me?"
