Liam asked, "If you didn't like me, why were you so kind to my family? Why did you help save Cole Group from bankruptcy?"
"How did I not realize how narcissistic you were before?" Aria grew impatient. "This is the last time, so let's make everything clear."
She stepped closer so he could hear her better.
Inside the building, Owen saw this and reflexively moved forward, only to stop behind the glass door.
The soundproofing was too good. He couldn't hear a word or make out what they were saying.
He frowned and glanced toward the door, visibly irritated.
"Hey, are you heading out?"
Owen turned around and saw a young man looking at him. The guy was standing in the middle of the doorway.
Owen moved aside and looked at the umbrella in the man's hand. "You're going out?"
The man was surprised by the question but nodded. "My girlfriend's here. I'm going to... get something."
Owen glanced at the door. "Wait a few more minutes."
"Why?" the young man asked.
The guy didn't wait for an answer and was about to head out. A hand stopped the door.
Owen said, "Did you see what's going on out there?"
The guy was about to get annoyed, but he glanced outside. "Holy crap, is someone proposing in the rain? What is he thinking?"
"That's not a proposal." Owen corrected. "That's my girlfriend."
"What?" The man was stunned. "Your girlfriend's being proposed to? And you're just standing here?"
Owen gave him a look. "Not a proposal. He's begging for forgiveness. He won't succeed. If you go out now, I'll interrupt my girlfriend."
The guy immediately understood. The ex was out there asking for forgiveness. He asked, "I won't make a sound, promise?"
"No." Owen glanced at the time. "Five minutes are up. I can go now. You wait until we come back in."
The boy said, "Alright. Can't believe you're this calm. You're really holding it together."
Owen said, "I trust her."
"Here, take the umbrella. Go already." The guy reconsidered and pulled the umbrella back. "Or better yet, go out in the rain. Play the pity card. Maybe she'll feel sorry for you."
Owen said, "That's not a good idea."
He took the umbrella anyway. "Thanks. If you ever need help, come find me, 18th floor, unit 1."
The guy smiled. "Sure. Go now. I'm outta here."
Owen thanked him again, pushed the door open, and stepped out.
The young guy snuck a glance, then turned and jogged off to the side, hiding and snapping a photo. [Baby, hurry up and come see the drama.]
Without the glass door, Owen could finally hear Aria's voice.
Aria said, "Our marriage was based on mutual need. You had an agenda when you proposed. Did you think I married you because I liked you? As the eldest son of the Cole family, don't be so stupid."
She continued, "I treated your family well and helped Cole Group because I have a sense of responsibility. I did what was expected of me. You're the one who failed to deliver. We never got to know each other. Where would the love come from?"
She never liked him.
Liam felt as if struck by lightning. Rain poured from his hair, and he looked utterly wrecked.
"That time you saved me..." His voice trembled.
"The bullet was aimed at me." Aria cut him off. "You getting hurt would have complicated things for me. Saving you was incidental. I want no more entanglements between us."
She added, "The quality control project belongs to Heffner Hospital and Mandino University. Cole Group is only an investor. If you try to use it to get near me again, I'll kick you out."
Finally, she warned, "Did you hear me clearly?"
