Once the semester officially began, Caleb was in the Computer Science department while I was in Law.
With his good looks, his face was all over the university's Facebook page from the start of term.
Eventually, someone couldn't take it anymore and posted:
"@Everyone crushing on Caleb Morgan from CS:
Please stop posting about him! Just FYI, I'm in Law with his girlfriend, and he practically follows her to every class he can. It's disgustingly cute.
Move on, ladies."
Attached was a candid photo of me sitting by the window with a deadpan expression while Caleb looked like a kicked puppy next to me, clearly being scolded.
In reality, I had just told him to stop accompanying me to class.
After the post spread, everyone said Caleb was like a devoted husband, all puppy-eyed and apologetic.
Lucas had applied to schools near Oxford too, but his scores didn't make the cut.
On Christmas Day, I had walked to the campus gate before realizing I'd left my phone in my dorm.
After retrieving it, I saw Lucas waiting at the gate.
His eyes lit up when he spotted me. "Sophie, I finally found you."
I frowned and tried to walk away.
He was wearing the down jacket and scarf I'd given him years ago, and still wouldn't give up. "Sophie… it's Christmas. Come eat with me, just dinner, please?"
"Shouldn't you ask a her boyfriend before inviting her out to dinner?" Caleb stepped in, looking annoyed as he positioned himself between Lucas and me.
Lucas's hands clenched into tight fists, his face turning pale. "Sophie, is that true? You're dating him?"
"Yes, it's true. I have a boyfriend now. Stay away from me."
He shook his head, looking dazed, then stared at me with reddening eyes. "How... how did you get a boyfriend? When we were kids, you said you'd marry me."
"I lost you, Sophie."
Caleb walked over with a cold expression and grabbed Lucas by the collar. "Yeah, thanks for your poor judgment. Now stay away from her."
Lucas seemed to lose all his strength as Caleb threw him to the ground.
Then Caleb took my hand and walked past him.
"Sophie, I'm sorry."
