He pulled out his phone and showed me a video. "Need me to handle this for you?"
Strange—he was asking for my opinion instead of just making decisions for me. So different from Travis.
I stared at the footage of Camila, still feeling that burning hatred in my chest.
"Could you help me report this to the police?"
He raised an eyebrow. "Just the police?"
I looked at him confused. "And maybe help me get that dress back?"
He looked down and ruffled my hair, wearing an unreadable smile.
"Still too kind for your own good, little crybaby."
"Oh, and should I call your dad?" He glanced at my bandaged foot.
Ever since Mom died, Dad had treated me like his most precious treasure.
When he found out I'd been hurt, he was on a plane to Rhode Island the very next day.
Even though I wasn't in pain anymore, the moment I saw Dad walk through that hospital door, tears started flowing uncontrollably.
He hugged me gently, his voice breaking. "My baby girl. You've been through so much."
"That Travis Russell kid wanted to marry you? Over my dead body!"
I looked at him confused, and Dad explained that Mr. Russell had come to our house a few days ago to discuss an engagement.
He wanted Travis and me to get married sooner rather than later.
"Dad, please tell me you didn't agree to that."
Dad puffed up indignantly. "Of course not! I haven't even asked my precious daughter what she wants. How could I agree to anything?"
"But now, even if you wanted to say yes, I wouldn't let you! Travis Russell doesn't deserve you!"
There was a knock at the door, and Tanner walked in.
He wore a polite, scholarly smile. "Good afternoon, sir. I'm here representing the Business Honors Program to check on Miss Rodriguez."
Dad looked at me questioningly, and I explained quickly, "I switched to business major. He's my upperclassman. He's the one who saved me both times—the allergic reaction and today."
Somehow they hit it off immediately. Dad was nodding approvingly at everything Tanner said.
Before leaving, Dad clapped Tanner on the shoulder. "I'm leaving Gabby in your care, son. She's been spoiled rotten by me, so please be patient with her."
"You're too modest, sir. Gabriella is hardworking, ambitious, and incredibly well-behaved. All the students and professors adore her."
Dad's smile was so wide it created wrinkles around his eyes. He turned to me before leaving.
"Gabby, honey, you listen to Tanner, okay? Daddy has some business to handle but I'll be back in a couple days."
Why did I feel like I'd just been sold and Dad was helping the buyer count the money?
I spent seven days in the hospital with Tanner and the nurses taking care of me.
During the boring downtime, I scrolled through TikTok and discovered Camila had been posting as "Travis's girlfriend," documenting their "love story."
She'd uploaded photos of gifts Travis had given her over three years, encouraging messages, the romantic mountain proposal, pictures from the welcome show...
Her narrative was all about a poor mountain girl who made it to an elite university and found love with her wealthy benefactor.
She'd gained quite a following, with hundreds of comments from people gushing over their "relationship."
A couple days ago, she started posting sob stories about my "obsessive harassment" of Travis and my "shameless attempts to seduce him."
People were threatening to come to campus and confront me.
They called me a homewrecker, a spoiled rich girl who destroyed true love...
But before any of them could show up, a photo surfaced online of Camila being arrested.
Followed immediately by crystal-clear HD footage of her throwing my phone down the mountain and leaving me to die. It went viral within hours.
Our family lawyer released a statement announcing we were pressing charges for assault, robbery, and defamation.
Eager internet sleuths dug up Camila's middle and high school history.
Stealing money from her parents to buy designer clothes and pay for expensive piano lessons.
Forging poverty documentation to steal financial aid from genuinely needy students.
Orchestrating bullying campaigns against prettier classmates, including one girl who ended up attempting suicide.
Her record was absolutely horrifying.
Brown expelled her immediately, and she got five years in prison.
Camila's parents made the trek from their mountain village, kneeling outside the university gates and begging for forgiveness, pleading for her readmission.
They even tried to find me, hoping to guilt-trip me into dropping the charges.
But Tanner intercepted all of them.
The whole thing left me shaken, realizing how much worse it could have been if she'd been more vicious...
Tanner took my cold hands in his. "Scared?"
"Did little crybaby forget? I promised I'd protect you."
I stared at him for a moment, pieces clicking into place.
"All of this... was you..."
He just smiled. "I didn't do anything. Just some concerned citizens doing their civic duty." Then he pulled out a gift bag from behind his back.
"Congratulations on getting discharged. Let's see if you like your present."
