That night, Cassian came home looking deathly pale.
Mara was in the kitchen getting water when she heard him come in. She turned around and nearly dropped the glass in her hands.
"You didn't take your medicine?" Her voice was strained.
"It was bad. Had to go to the ER to get my stomach pumped." Cassian collapsed weakly onto the sofa, his hair damp with cold sweat.
Mara's hand trembled, and the scalding water splashed onto the back of her hand, instantly turning it red.
Did he love Juliette that much? Enough to get his stomach pumped just to eat her cooking?
She brought him a glass of warm water and knelt down to massage his stomach.
After Cassian drank the water and felt her gentle touch, his furrowed brow finally relaxed a bit. He drowsily leaned against her shoulder and fell asleep.
Just like countless times before.
But this time, Mara didn't gaze lovingly at his features.
She gently laid him down on the sofa, covered him with a blanket, and went upstairs without looking back.
The next morning when Cassian woke up, he was already dressed in his suit, standing in the living room.
"Why does the house look so empty?" He frowned as he looked around.
Mara opened her mouth to explain, but he'd already moved on: "Juliette's having an art show today. She invited both of us."
"I—"
"She just got back, doesn't know many people here." Cassian cut her off. "Just come help fill the room."
Mara clenched her fists, but eventually nodded.
At the exhibition, Juliette immediately rushed over to Cassian the moment she saw him, intimately linking her arm through his.
"Cassian! I've been dying to show you this one..." She pointed to an oil painting of snow-capped mountains, her voice soft and dreamy. "I painted this in Switzerland. I thought about you every day..."
Cassian listened quietly, his gaze fixed on the painting, expression unreadable.
In the end, he bought every single painting.
Whispers immediately started around them—
"I heard Mr. Whitmore was completely devoted to Miss Voss back in college. Guess some things never change..."
"Even after she left him, he's still this supportive. That's what I call true love..."
Juliette shot a smug glance at Mara, then approached her while Cassian was at the front desk paying: "You hear that? Even after all this time, I'm still the only one who matters to him."
She lowered her voice, her red lips almost touching Mara's ear: "If you're still not getting the message, I don't mind making it crystal clear."
Just as she finished speaking, the fire alarm suddenly blared!
"Fire! Everyone out! Move!"
The crowd instantly panicked. Mara was knocked down by the rushing people, her ankle twisting badly, the pain making her vision go black.
She struggled to get up, but then saw Cassian fighting against the crowd, rushing back in—
"Juliette! Juliette, where are you?!"
His voice held a panic that Mara had never heard before.
The next second, he found a terrified Juliette, pulled her into his arms protectively, and rushed out without looking back.
Mara sat collapsed on the floor, watching their figures disappear into the smoke.
She desperately tried to stand up when suddenly—CRASH!
A burning beam came crashing down!
When she woke up again, she was greeted by blinding white.
"Mara! Thank God you're awake!" Her best friend Lynn threw herself beside the bed, her swollen eyes full of worry. "You scared the shit out of me! Do you have any idea how close you came to dying?!"
Mara painfully moved her neck—every bone in her body felt like it had been taken apart and reassembled.
"Where's Cassian?" she asked hoarsely.
Lynn's face immediately darkened: "Him? He's playing nurse to Juliette! You broke a fucking rib, but princess over there scraped her knee, so obviously she needs all the attention!"
Mara closed her eyes, her chest hurting so much she could barely breathe.
"That bastard is unbelievable! When he was in that wheelchair, who was there 24/7? Who survived on two hours of sleep because she was terrified he'd hurt himself? Now you're lying here half-dead, and he's..."
Lynn gripped her hand tightly, her voice breaking: "Mara, he's back on his feet, but he still hasn't said a damn word about being with you. How long are you gonna keep doing this to yourself?!"
The room fell silent except for the steady beeping of the monitors.
After a long while, Mara spoke softly: "I applied for a visa."
"When it comes through..." She stared at the ceiling, her voice barely audible. "I'm leaving."
Just as she finished speaking, the hospital room door was suddenly slammed open—
"Leaving?" Cassian stood in the doorway, his face stormy. "Who is leaving?"
