After the auction ended, guests began to scatter in small groups.
While Cassian was tied up in conversation with other attendees, Juliette seized her chance to corner Mara.
"Mara, you've gotta see it now, right?" Juliette kept her voice low, her red lips curving into a smug smile. "Cassian's in love with me. If you keep throwing yourself at him like this, you're just gonna make him sick of you."
Mara looked at her quietly, her eyes perfectly calm: "You'll get what you want."
"What's that supposed to mean?" Juliette's brow furrowed.
Mara didn't answer, turning to leave.
"Ahhh—"
A sharp scream suddenly pierced the air behind her.
Mara spun around to see Juliette tumbling down the stairs!
"Mara!"
Cassian's furious shout echoed through the venue.
He rushed over and shoved Mara aside hard, the force sending her stumbling back against the wall.
"What the fuck did Juliette ever do to you? Why would you pull this shit?" He demanded, his eyes ice-cold with rage. "Even if I screwed up protecting you before, you should come at me! Why the hell would you hurt her?"
Mara's back pressed against the cold wall, her voice quiet but steady: "I didn't push her."
"Cassian..." Juliette weakly grabbed his sleeve. "It was just an accident... Miss Collins didn't do anything..."
"Don't cover for her!" Cassian shot Mara a withering look, then bent down to gather Juliette in his arms. "I'm done with you. Figure out your own way home."
Mara stood there, watching as Cassian hurried away with Juliette cradled against his chest.
His suit jacket was draped over Juliette's shoulders, and he held her like she might break at any moment.
He was always like this.
The second Juliette shed a tear, Mara became the villain.
She touched the plane ticket in her pocket—a flight to London in one week that would carry away all her love and heartbreak.
He wouldn't have to see her as dead weight anymore.
Because soon, this burden would vanish from his world forever.
The auction venue was miles from the villa and in the middle of nowhere. Mara couldn't catch a cab and had to hoof it back on her own.
Rain started falling when she was only halfway there.
The cold drops soaked through her hair and clothes, water seeping into her shoes until every step was agony.
By the time she finally dragged herself home, her feet were raw with blisters and she was burning up with fever.
She forced herself to find some medicine, bandaged her wounds as best she could, then collapsed into a restless sleep.
The next day, she was jolted awake by commotion downstairs.
As soon as she made it down, she found the living room crammed with Juliette's designer luggage.
Cassian's voice drifted from the living room: "Juliette's parents are overseas, and it's not safe for her to be alone. She's staying here for a while. Just keep to yourself and don't try any more of your bullshit."
Mara gripped the banister, her face ashen as she descended: "I won't."
She wouldn't try any more schemes.
And she was done loving him too.
