During the time Juliette moved in, Mara witnessed a completely different side of Cassian.
He remembered that Juliette hated cilantro and would swap out dishes she disliked the moment she frowned;
During thunderstorms, he'd rush to comfort a frightened Juliette;
The study that Mara had never been allowed to enter was now freely accessible to Juliette.
Mara finally understood what Cassian looked like when he truly loved someone.
She thought back to the past few years, how she'd felt secretly pleased when his depressive episodes would be restrained by her presence, thinking it was proof he was starting to care for her. How fucking ridiculous.
That day, as Mara passed by the study, she caught a glimpse of Juliette toying with something in her hands.
She stopped, peering through the half-open door—
In Juliette's hands was the white jade pendant that had belonged to Cassian's grandmother!
The pendant dangled precariously from her fingertips, nearly slipping several times.
Mara's heart lurched as she rushed in and snatched the pendant away.
"What are you doing? This belonged to Cassian's grandmother—you can't just..."
"What's it to you?" Juliette impatiently grabbed it back, and seeing how panicked Mara was, her lips curved into a malicious smile. "Oh, you care that much? Well then..."
She deliberately loosened her grip.
"Crack—"
The pendant hit the floor hard, splitting in two.
Mara's heart nearly stopped.
That was the most precious thing to Cassian—a family heirloom his grandmother had personally placed in his hands on her deathbed!
"What happened?"
Cassian's voice came from the doorway. Mara looked up to see him staring at the broken pieces, his face dark.
"Miss Collins dropped it," Juliette was quick to speak, her voice tinged with hurt. "I was just looking at it, and she came rushing over to grab it..."
Cassian's eyes instantly turned cold: "Mara, how could you..."
"The study has cameras," Mara interrupted softly, her voice trembling. "You can check them. See what really happened."
The air froze.
Juliette's face shifted, and she reluctantly changed her story: "Sorry, Cassian, I... accidentally broke it. Is it really important to you? I can get you an identical replacement."
What was shocking was how Cassian's anger instantly evaporated.
He quickly moved to Juliette's side, taking her hands: "Are you hurt?"
Mara stood there, watching as Cassian carefully examined Juliette's fingers, feeling like her heart was being carved out with a knife.
No one knew better than she did what that jade pendant meant to Cassian.
Three years ago, when his mother accidentally lost the pendant, Cassian had just undergone leg surgery.
He'd dragged himself through the snow for three hours searching for it, then came back and fought with his mother, locking himself in his room and destroying everything in sight.
It was Mara who'd braved the blizzard, searching the yard inch by inch. Her fingers went numb from the cold, but she finally found the pendant at dawn.
And now, with the pendant deliberately shattered by Juliette, all he cared about was whether she was injured.
Mara let out a bitter laugh.
So this was how deeply he loved Juliette.
And she'd been naive enough to think Cassian would marry her once he recovered.
How many nights had she spent by his bedside, watching him struggle through painful rehabilitation, secretly promising herself she'd stay with him forever?
Even during his darkest moments, she'd written in her diary the laughable wish to "marry him once he gets back on his feet."
Now she realized she was nothing but a complete joke.
At least she was finally awake.
That unappreciated devotion—she'd never waste it again.
