Meanwhile, at the most luxurious hotel in the city.
As one of the top elite families in the capital, the Whitmore Group heir's birthday party naturally drew significant attention. The guests were all prominent figures from high society, but the man at the center of it all seemed distracted.
Cassian's friends had noticed something was off too.
"Hey, weird that Mara isn't here yet. Think she forgot?"
"No way! When has Mara ever forgotten anything about Cassian?"
"True, but the party's more than half over. This is the first time she's ever been this late..."
They exchanged glances, all eyes eventually landing on Cassian. Seeing him lost in thought, Marcus finally couldn't hold back: "Dude, maybe you should call Mara and check what's up?"
"No need. She's just getting my gift ready," Cassian reflexively shook his head.
Though his friends still found it strange, they didn't push further.
Maybe they were just overthinking it.
The party had reached the gift-giving portion. Marcus and the others had already presented their gifts, and now it was Juliette's turn.
Though Marcus and the crew couldn't stand Juliette for abandoning Cassian years ago, it was his birthday, so they kept their mouths shut.
Until she stepped forward, blushing as she offered her carefully prepared gift with both hands.
"Cassian, this is my—"
But before she could finish, Cassian's face went white after glancing at his phone. In full view of everyone, he shoved past her and bolted for the exit.
"Ah!"
Caught off guard, Juliette was knocked to the ground. The sharp pain brought tears to her eyes. She instinctively tried to call out to Cassian, but the man who usually put her first didn't even look back as he ran out of the ballroom.
Everyone stood there stunned, unsure what had happened.
Marcus and the others were equally blindsided by the sudden turn of events. Someone remembered Mara's absence, their face going pale: "Shit, something must've happened to Mara."
They all started panicking and rushed after him, leaving Juliette alone on the floor. When she heard their parting words, her teeth clenched in fury.
Mara, always fucking Mara!
But no one cared what she thought.
When Cassian raced back to the villa, the house was completely empty.
Still refusing to accept it, he went straight upstairs and searched every possible place. But there was nothing.
Not only had Mara vanished, but everything connected to her had disappeared too.
He stood dazed in the empty room, staring at the message on his phone and the number below it. After a long moment, as if suddenly remembering something, he dialed that number.
Even he didn't realize his hands were shaking uncontrollably as he made the call.
The dial tone rang incessantly in his ear, turning his thoughts into chaos.
But Mara didn't answer.
When the call automatically ended, the doorbell rang. He had no idea how he made it downstairs to open the door. Seeing Marcus and the others looking frantic, he still felt like none of this was real.
"Cassian, why'd you suddenly leave? Did something happen to Mara?"
He forced himself to ignore the strange, painful tightness in his chest. Opening his mouth, he stayed silent for a long time before finally answering in a hoarse voice:
"Mara said... she's gone."
