Meanwhile, Mara was completely oblivious to all of this.
The decision to hold the wedding back home had actually been Noah's father's suggestion. Though he'd settled abroad, the Hartwell family elders were still in the country. Thinking that Grandpa and Grandma Hartwell hadn't seen their grandson in ages, and that their friends were all back home too, they'd ultimately decided to hold the wedding domestically.
Planning a wedding was a troublesome and time-consuming affair. With the wedding date set so soon, they had a lot to handle during this period. Running around every day left her exhausted and with no mental energy for other matters, completely pushing thoughts of Cassian to the back of her mind.
But she hadn't expected that while she'd forgotten about Cassian, he hadn't forgotten about her—and had even come directly to find her.
When she was blocked at the bathroom entrance again, Mara just felt tired.
She'd only gone out alone this once without Noah, and he'd found his opening. It seemed that for the rest of their time in New York City, she couldn't go anywhere alone unless absolutely necessary.
"Is there something you need?" After a moment of silence, Mara spoke first.
Cassian didn't answer her question, just looked at her as if she were some lost treasure he'd found again. That gaze was too naked, making her frown involuntarily.
Just as she was about to speak, she saw him raise his hand. The next instant, everything went black and she lost consciousness completely.
When she woke up again, Mara found herself in an incredibly familiar room.
She groggily sat up, instinctively reaching for her phone but grasping nothing. Before she could think further, a knock came at the door. She remained silent, but whoever was outside didn't seem to be waiting for her response and simply opened the door.
Seeing it was Cassian, she felt a sense of "of course it would be him."
"Mara, would you like something to eat?"
Seeing her awake, he didn't ask about her lack of response earlier. Instead, he smiled gently and set down the food he was carrying on a nearby table. "I figured you'd be awake around now, and you should be hungry after not eating for so long, so I brought some food."
Mara looked at Cassian a few more times, not having expected he'd actually do things like this.
Feeling genuinely hungry, she didn't want to keep arguing with him and simply took the food to eat.
As if not expecting her to be so cooperative, Cassian was momentarily stunned to see her actually start eating without a word. Then he smiled again: "Looks like Mara adapts quickly. It wasn't in vain that I went to the trouble of collecting all the things you used before, decorating the room to match how it was when you lived here."
At those words, Mara paused.
She looked around at the decor and furnishings, only to realize with shock that this was the exact room she'd lived in three years ago.
An inexplicable emotion churned in her chest. After a moment of silence, she looked at Cassian and asked:
"Why?"
Why do all this, why bring her here, and why go to the trouble of restoring the room to how it used to be?
He still sat at a respectful distance, that smile never leaving his lips.
Hearing her question, he instinctively pressed his lips together. After a moment, he pulled out that ring box he always carried.
"Because I love you, Mara. I can't just watch you leave me." He took out the ring and pushed it toward her, his voice soft and light but carrying an emotion she couldn't ignore. "Mara, please don't marry him. During my most desperate time, you were the only one who stayed by my side without hesitation, encouraging me to pull through. I used to think I could live without caring about you, but when you left, I realized I can't live without you. So Mara, don't leave me, don't abandon me..."
By the end, his face showed clear anxiety and unease.
Mara had never imagined she'd see this expression on Cassian's face, but listening to his words, she frowned almost imperceptibly.
Love? What kind of love was this, coming so late?
In Mara's understanding, loving someone was impossible to hide. Even if you didn't realize your own feelings at the time, your subconscious would instinctively protect and defend them.
