The next morning, my husband announced he was leaving for a business trip over breakfast. I barely managed a weak nod in response.
He lingered longer than usual—probably noticing how withdrawn I was—gently coaxing me out of my funk before finally heading out. I plastered on a smile, but my chest felt like it was filled with lead.
He's so good to me… How could I even entertain thoughts about someone else?
Ring—
My phone buzzed to life. Sophia's name flashed on the screen.
"Hey, can you come help me with something?" she asked, deliberately vague.
I didn't ask questions—just grabbed my bag and flagged down a cab.
The elevator was packed when I stepped in, bodies pressed too close. Then I felt it—a hand sliding up the back of my dress.
I shifted away, only to realize another hand was groping me from the opposite side. My stomach twisted.
Clenching my jaw, I turned and locked eyes with a stranger.
Those five minutes stretched into an eternity. Every second, those wandering hands grew bolder, creeping higher. I dodged as subtly as I could, not wanting to cause a scene.
But when I risked a glance to my left, my blood ran cold.
The man stared back at me, completely unashamed, his face eerily blank.
He thinks I'm letting this happen.
And why wouldn't he? We were crammed in the far corner, hidden from view. No one could see what he was doing.
I opened my mouth to scream—
Ding.
The elevator doors slid open.
A hand shot out, yanking the creep backward and slamming him to the ground.
Ethan Lowell stood there, his expression dark. He'd just been here for dinner—until he walked into this.
His eyes swept over my disheveled state. Without a word, he shrugged off his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.
I crumpled against his chest, shaking, tears spilling over. "Ethan… thank God it's you."
His arms tightened around me. "I've got you," he murmured, rubbing slow circles on my back.
I nodded weakly, then caught sight of the groper slinking away through the crowd.
Before I could say anything, Ethan cut in, "Don't worry. Security's already got him. Let's get you out of here."
In one smooth motion, he lifted me, grabbed my purse, and carried me out.
Pressed against the solid warmth of his chest, my panic slowly ebbed. "Thank you," I whispered, resting my head on his shoulder.
Down in the lobby, I filled Sophia in. Her face twisted in fury, and she spun around like she was ready to hunt the guy down herself—until I stopped her.
Ethan smirked. "Relax. He's already at the police station."
I studied Ethan's sharp jawline, something fluttering in my chest—
Then Sophia suddenly giggled and poked him in the arm.
"Hey, hero," she teased, "heard you knocked that guy out cold. How about giving me your number? We could… spar sometime." She winked. "You did save our girl here."
She nudged me pointedly.
My stomach dropped.
Sophia was single. Ethan was single. It made perfect sense.
So why did the thought make my chest ache? I stared at the floor, my throat tight.
