Vivian said mockingly: "Miss Carter, what a coincidence running into you again. Did you get your divorce shit sorted out?"
The chubby brat snorted and looked up at my brother.
"See, I told you! Your brother-in-law doesn't want your sister anymore. Your sister is used goods, a slut!"
My brother's face went red with anger. I quickly grabbed him. "Miss Vivian, I'm still Lincoln's wife right now."
She laughed: "Just because you say so? Do you know who your brother beat up? He beat up the Hayes Group CEO's brother-in-law!"
The teacher started kissing ass immediately, totally different from how she'd just been screaming at me.
"Mrs. Hayes, thank you so much for coming down here. I've looked into it thoroughly—it was definitely him who hit your brother."
"The school will absolutely punish him and get your brother justice! Don't worry!"
She showed off the watch on her wrist as the teacher's eyes lit up, pulling out a chair for her.
That watch was worth millions. I knew it because Lincoln had given me one when he proposed.
I never knew he'd also bought one for Vivian back then.
Watching her sit there looking down at my brother with disgust, I suddenly felt this rage boil up and didn't want to back down anymore.
"I said we're not divorced, so we're not divorced. I'm Mrs. Hayes. Tell your brother to apologize for running his mouth."
Vivian snorted with the exact same look Lincoln got when he was annoyed: "Still won't face reality? Do you want to be a rich wife that badly?"
"Look at what you are. Since you insist on saying that, then prove it."
Seeing my brother's hopeful look, I grabbed my phone to call Lincoln, but heard that familiar busy tone, remembering I was still blocked.
Vivian cracked up: "Right, how could you get through? The Hayes Group CEO doesn't take random harassing calls."
"Sorry you had to embarrass yourself like that."
I could only text him, wanting him to back me up. We had to wait for the cooling-off period before we'd be divorced—right now I didn't want my family freaking out.
But shocker, this time he'd even blocked my texts.
Without saying much, Vivian held her phone in front of me, showing that obvious contact name—Husband.
Then she dialed that number I knew by heart.
He picked up instantly, Lincoln's voice coming through: "What's wrong, Vivian? Missing me? I'm at an auction bidding on that necklace you wanted."
Her voice got all cutesy: "Oh no, it's just someone at school is telling my brother that she's Mrs. Hayes. I'm calling to make her snap out of her fantasy."
"How's that possible? Everyone knows you're my wife! Who said that? I'll go put her in her place!"
Hearing his cold, brutal tone, I laughed bitterly: "What if it was me who said it, Lincoln? Would you put me in my place too?"
He paused. "Sophia Carter?"
Seeing he wasn't even sure of my voice, I hummed yeah.
The teacher looked between Vivian and me, her eyes sparkling with drama.
In the phone's silence, Vivian raised her eyebrows at me, then giggled: "Honey, tell us—who exactly is your wife?"
"You, obviously. Don't fight about stupid shit like this in public—it's beneath you."
My brother looked at me in shock: "Sis, did you really divorce brother-in-law?"
I smiled bitterly, then saw a new text on my phone:
[Didn't you say you wanted to divorce me? Now you're telling people outside that you're my wife. Finally realized you screwed up?]
[After all, Vivian is the mother of the Hayes heirs and has been with me for so many years. I can't let her lose face in public. Don't say stuff like that anymore. If you need cash, I'll give it to you.]
He was still willing to throw me money, yet divorced me without hesitation and wouldn't admit our relationship.
I suddenly wasn't sure if there had been any real feelings between us all these years, but luckily I didn't give a damn anymore.
