When I pushed open the door, laughter and cheerful voices instantly filled the air.
My brother and Knox looked animated, showing no trace of the concern and anxiety from our phone call.
Mila was in the middle of some playful complaint. When she saw me, she immediately jumped onto Knox's lap.
Her smooth, shapely legs wrapped tightly around his waist.
"Knox, I'm so scared. Piper won't kick me out, will she?"
My brother was quick to respond: "Don't worry, Mila. She doesn't have that authority. As long as I'm here, this will always be your home."
Mila got the answer she wanted, satisfaction gleaming in her eyes.
I suddenly remembered this wasn't her first time turning the tables.
The year I was brought home, Mila embraced me tearfully in front of everyone, playing the role of the caring sister and winning universal admiration.
But as soon as she led me to my bedroom, she slapped me hard across the face.
Before I could even get up, she ran out sobbing dramatically.
"Piper hates me for taking her place. She wants me to get out!"
Hatred flashed in my brother's eyes as he threw my luggage outside.
Though Knox didn't say anything, he ordered people to thoroughly disinfect every place I'd been.
I stood alone in the yard while servants sprayed disinfectant around me.
They watched from the balcony, looking down on me.
That look... it was as if I were nothing but garbage.
My vision gradually came back into focus.
Knox sighed, about to comfort Mila when he caught sight of me from the corner of his eye.
His pupils contracted sharply as he feigned composure and pulled Mila off him.
"Piper, you're back. How are you feeling today?"
As he spoke, he reached out to touch my face as usual.
But I instinctively turned away.
Knox's hand froze in mid-air. He stared at me for several seconds, his expression inscrutable.
Mila stepped forward timidly.
"Piper, I came back on my own. Don't blame your brother or Knox—it has nothing to do with them."
I opened my mouth to speak, but before I could say anything...
Knox and my brother simultaneously moved to shield her.
As if they feared I might hurt her.
My brother's tone grew firm: "Mila's back in the States with nowhere to stay. It won't affect you in any way."
Knox frowned as he looked at me, just like three years ago: "Piper, this will always be Mila's home too."
Their words consistently favored Mila.
Despite how many times she had betrayed them.
Despite how many times I'd tried to explain about that slap.
No one believed me.
No one would ever truly blame her, just as no one would ever truly believe me.
The three of them existed in their own sealed world. No matter how hard I tried, I could never break through.
Fortunately, I no longer cared.
Mila was visibly excited. She hoped I would cry and make a scene like before—collapse completely and become the clown once more.
But under their nervous or excited gazes, I simply said "oh" and walked away.
The three of them froze in place.
There was no argument as they expected, no tearful breakdown as they imagined.
I just calmly accepted it.
Knox stared at me for a few seconds, then shook off Mila who was still trying to talk to him, and followed me inside.
