It was already dark, seven hours since Piper had left.
Knox had never felt such anxiety, even his fingers trembled slightly.
When the thirtieth call still showed as unanswered, he suddenly slapped himself hard.
Jayden jumped in surprise and grabbed his hand.
"Don't do that. Piper's always been sensible—she'll be fine."
Far from being reassured, Knox grew even more distraught.
"It's all my fault. How could I say such cruel things to her? I knew those monsters were her trauma, yet I still used it against her."
Guilt shadowed Jayden's face too.
But just as he was about to speak, his phone suddenly rang.
After answering, his assistant delivered news.
"Mr. Calloway, we've located Miss Reeves..."
Hearing the address, both men froze.
They couldn't understand why Piper had been at the hospital for so long.
But in the next second, cold sweat broke out on their backs as a terrible suspicion formed in their minds.
Knox floored the accelerator, racing toward the hospital.
A journey normally taking thirty minutes was completed in fifteen.
Getting out of the car, his legs nearly gave way; only Jayden's support kept him from falling.
Both men sprinted through the hospital until a nurse stopped them.
Only then did Knox snap back to reality and frantically ask: "Where is Piper Reeves?"
The nurse seemed not to recall immediately, flipped through her notes, and then exclaimed: "Oh, she left. After her surgery, she rested for half a day and then left."
A ringing filled Knox's head as he repeated dumbly:
"Surgery? What surgery?"
Jayden lost his composure too, gripping the nurse's shoulders and shouting:
"Tell us! What surgery?!"
The nurse backed away fearfully, her voice trembling: "An... abortion."
Darkness instantly engulfed Knox's vision, the sounds around him suddenly distant.
In a blur, he collapsed to the ground.
When he awoke, Jayden was by his side.
Jayden's eyes were red-rimmed, with stubble sprouting on his chin after several hours.
He stared fixedly at a photo of himself with Piper, lost in thought.
Knox threw back the covers and got out of bed, heading for the door.
Jayden anxiously caught up with him, defending Piper:
"Don't blame her. She just reacted impulsively. We were at fault too. She endured so much…"
"I don't blame her," Knox interrupted, pausing as if in extreme pain.
Finally, he continued slowly: "I just want to find her quickly and help her recover."
With that, he strode out.
The two immediately mobilized all their connections to search for Piper.
But after three days, they still came up empty-handed.
